How does a wizard learn about the existence and properties of Horcruxes? Who knows what they are, how to make them, what they can do? What wizard would make a Horcrux? Under what circumstances? And for what reasons? And why are they so evil? Hermione is working very hard to answer these questions. As Hogwarts virtual library search-engine, she is coming up empty. But Tom Riddle did it, somehow.

the idea that Dumbledore has a horcrux is genious. all the facts that you found seem to fit together. it would also be a good reason to have the whole horcrux thing come up. good deep analysis! continue looking for those little clues to help everyone realize that Dumbledore isn't !

I don't like the idea that DD made a horcrux.....but he is 150 years old..
We only know that he's been at Hogwarts for about 53 years* when Harry starts at Hogwarts.
What did he do before that?
Has he always been the upstanding wizard he is now?
Where did he gain all his Knowledge of dark magic? Including horcruxs.......
For all his talk of love and the unimpeachable trust he shows Snape, he sizes young Tom Riddle up in minutes.
Is there a chance that before age and wisdom mellowed him, DD was wilder...
Mabey even reckless?
I picture him more like Fred and George( curious and dareing) then like Percy or even Hermione..
Just a thought.
* I got his date from the H.P. Lexicon

After reading about Dumbledore's horcrux I would consider the fact that seeing a being commited would tear your soul apart. So may be Dumbledore saw Voldemort Haary potters parent. Seeing your friends get ed is very painfull in my opinion. Like this Dumbledore could have made a Horcrux without being a er.

I DO NOT like the idea of Dumbledor haveing a horcurx. I mean, from the discription of how it rips your soul, and how it really screwed up Voldemort, Mentally AND PHYSICALLY. Does Dumbledor look or act to you like he only has part of a soul? And even if he doesn't look bad, think back to Harry's 3rd year. When people talk about a dementor's kiss. The person live but they be empty. DD is not like that.
But Kevin, thats a good piont. We have no idea what he was like when he was younger. Even so I still do not belive that Albus would have purposly ed. It just goes aginst everything we think about DD. And if Harry finds out somthing like that. I am sure he won't be able to trust or forgive Dumbledor. After all Harry has lost in his life, to find out that his last mentor that he trusts completly turns out to ALSO be a er. I belive that Dumbledor haveing a Horcurx would ruin the stroy.
and Joop, even if someone were to have their soul ripped apart, do you think that it automatically means that they use it as a Horcurx?
I also relized this. I don't know how it ties in but remember in the 5th book, when DD is battleing LV. Voldy says something like "you can't me" and Albus says "there are things worse thatn ". I think this adds to the story but I don't know how.

I don't think just witnessing some one would do it though...
Slughorn specifically tells young Riddle that you have to commit MURDER. Not justifable homocide, not self-defense,not manslaughter... MURDER.
The intentional and premeditated taking of anothers life..
Perhaps, Dumbledoor knows the weight of guilt from commiting such an act...
Mabey that's what he's talking about when he says there are worse things than .......
The guilt of living with the consequences of a moments decision.......
Maybe thats why he was so prepared to believe that guilt turned Snape....
Just a thought.

First of all, I would like to say, I had help with my family on this comment. I believe that Dumbledore did defeat, and in my opinion, the dark wizard Grindlewald. I think it's entirely possible that Dumbledore created a horcrux. Even though the idea that Fawkes is a Pheonix is very good, and has lots of positives for it, I think it's too obvious for J.K.Rowling. Doesn't Dumbledore say in the first Harry Potter book, "I would trust Hagrid with my life?". I think that implies that Dumbledore is or trust Hagrid with his life at one point. I think that something of Hagrid's possesion could be a horcrux. When I thought of this, my immediate thought was his umbrella, and i still think that might be it. But I'm still of two minds with this one, because I am sure that somewhere in the 2nd book Dumbledore says that he never be gone from the castle, so long as those here a loyal to me. That could be a positive for Hagrid or Fawkes. Dumbledore said when he first introduced Harry to Fawkes that they were very loyal creatures. But we all know that Hagrid is one of the most loyal human beings to Dumbledore. I know I'm going back on what i said, but Fawkes is the more direct to the loyalty.(Unless anyone can prove me wrong). And also, I might have read this before, but it's either Dumbledore bursts into flame, or flames erupt around Dumbledore, but to me, that seems very much like a connection to Fawkes.
One other point I want to draw your attention to is that Dumbledore always said things like "For the organized mind, is but another great adventure." That sounds like he doesn't want to come back to life. And if you're thinking he also says something like "To live a life with a ripped soul wouldn't be living", i agree with Kevin that this may just be guilt of what he has done before and regretted. I think that because Dumbledore thinks that is just another great adventure, he has a horcrux, but not useit. I think Harry find out about the horcrux, but Dumbledore continue to be thought completely .
Also, with the idea that Snape and Dumbledore were arguing about ing Dumbledore, I completely agree. I think that Snape is on the good side, but that leaves one unanswered question for me. If he is spying for the good side, who is he giving the information to, and just out of curiosity, how? Any ideas?
I'd just like to add, Eric Scott and anyone who thinks Dumbledore was asked by someone to them, if someone asked Dumbledore to them, it wouldn't be an act of evil, it would be an act of loyalty to the person who asked him to them.
Please tell me your opinions.

Ok so IF Hagrid is keeping a horcurx, then why is he always saying stuff like "great man, Dumbledore"?
Also, Just because you someone, does not mean that you automatically have a Horcurx. Voldemort has tons of people and only has 7 horcurxes. I think someone in the 6th book said something like "he saved to really important s for his Horcurxes and Harry was going to be the last one."
So if Bridget is right that Dumbledore doesn't want to come back to life, than why would he have a Horcurx? That would require taking steps tword imortality (AFTER MURDER) which we know Dumbledore isn't for if he thinks of as another great adventure.
Very good pionts but they don't add up.

Kate, LV's screwed up physically (his features are waxy and distorted and inhuman) because he made SEVEN Horcruxes. Making ONE Horcrux won't do that to you. Even so, DD's nose is a bit crooked...I think he did make a Horcrux by ing Grindelwald.

No Kate, I don't think if someones soul is ripped he?she would make a Horcrux.
I just made my point that it might be possible to make a horcrux without actually being a er.

Ok.. According to the time line at the H.P.Lexicon, DD would have left school around 1858. Now, he and Slughorn started teaching at Hogwarts the same year...they estimate it at 1936-1938.
I teach science, not math... but I come up with 78 years we know absolutly nothing about. Was this the time spent working with Nicholas Flammel?
Did DD EVER work for the ministry? Could that be why he doesn't seem to trust it? Has he ever hunted down and destroyed horcruxes before? Are there other wizards alive that have? How much impact would DD's have on the international wizarding community?
By the way, I hope it turns out RAB is Ali Bashir... the flying carpet smuggler...

I also agree with the horcrux theory as the last thing Voldemort would have wanted according to the book was that Dumbledore knows of his return,so maybe with his hidden horcrux he has faked his own so that Voldemort becomes free of the greatest threat looming over him and to proove Snape once again loyal to Voldemort.
To the contrary of the same thing if Dumbledore has indeed created his horcrux in Fawkes the most terrible thing would be that he not be able to himself ever as his soul has been connected with Fawkes immortal soul. And Dumbledore would surely not want this.
