by David Haber, Wizard News Managing Editor

The 2006 Drama Desk Awards were presented on Sunday Night at the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center, hosted by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Three of the winners on Sunday night are well known to Harry Potter fans.

Richard Griffiths, Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter movies, was awarded Outstanding Actor in a Play for The History Boys, and for the same show, Frances de la Tour, who was Madame Maxime in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, won Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. The History Boys also won the Outstanding Play and Outstanding Director of a Play awards.

Also, Jim Dale, who is the voice of the Harry Potter audiobooks in the US, was awarded Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for The Threepenny Opera.

And finally, Awake and Sing! was awarded Outstanding Revival of a Play. Awake and Sing! features Zoe Wanamaker, who was Madame Hooch in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

The Drama Desk Awards were taped and will be subsequently broadcast nationwide on PBS TV. The Drama Desk, which was founded in 1949, honors both Broadway and off-Broadway productions.
