Phoenix Rising Harry Potter symposium now open for registration
NEW ORLEANS -- As New Orleans' world-famous Mardi Gras is reaching its pinnacle in the early morning hours of Feb. 28, the celebration begins for Harry Potter fans the world over. Registration for Phoenix Rising, an academic symposium in New Orleans on all things Potter, opens at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Fat Tuesday, and there's some great lagniappe (French for "a little something extra") in store for those first in line for the conference (http://www.thephoenixrises.org/registration).
The first 100 people to register will receive a limited edition T-shirt designed by fan artist Alice Wack, aka Alicey. In addition, the first 300 people to register will receive an invitation to an exclusive soiree on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, the evening before the conference steps off. Only these registrants and volunteers will be invited to check in to the conference early.
Phoenix Rising, scheduled for May 17-21, 2007, is now offering a specially-priced registration. A full registration costs $115 and includes admission to all Phoenix Rising academic and exploratory programming, admission to all evening events, two full meals (the Overture Dinner and Coda Breakfast) and a T-shirt available only to conference attendees. The registration price will go up to $140 on March 29, so potential attendees are invited to take advantage of this early discount.
The core of Phoenix Rising is a unique interdisciplinary study of the Harry Potter series, with an emphasis on sharing scholarship between academics, students, professionals, writers, artists, and fans. In addition, the conference endeavors to expand on this more formal selection with exploratory programming -- activities open to everyone that challenge individuals and groups, in a sociable atmosphere, to use knowledge of the books and apply skills in reading, writing, art, and problem-solving.
To that end, interested authors and artists registering for Phoenix Rising are invited to join the Paintbrush and Quill Society, a collaborative effort to produce an illustrated work of fiction for display at the conference. Participation is open to the first 50 authors and 50 artists who sign up during their registration, at no additional cost.
Phoenix Rising is presented by Narrate Conferences, Inc., a non-profit corporation based in Denver, Colo.
