Viggo Mortensen leads low-tech lifestyle

[from Teen Hollywood]

Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen once drove his agent mad because he refused to buy a phone.

The simple-living Danish movie star resisted getting a telephone until he moved to Los Angeles - after missing out on a string of auditions when his agent couldn't get hold of him.

He explains, "I was living in New York and I used to run to the pay phone every few days and call my agent, who'd say, 'You had a couple of auditions yesterday but too bad.

"I got one (a phone) and I had it in the house and I was just looking at it... It made me nervous. This object is really scary - and then it rang and it was my agent.

"He said, 'I'm just making sure your phone works.' The next time it rang I threw it out of the back window, into the alley. I got a phone when I moved to California."

But Mortensen's fear of modern technology continues - he still doesn't own a TV set, which cause huge problems last week (29FEB04) when his family joined him to watch the Oscars.

He reveals, "I had to call a friend of mine and ask if I could come over with my whole family and watch the Oscars. We raced over there and I said, 'You guys watch and enjoy, I'll go get some food, I'll go take a nap.

But he couldn't resist the temptation to sneak a peek: "When I heard Lord of The Rings win that first one, I thought, 'I'm not going to lie here in the dark like an idiot."
