Why did Dumbledore have James' cloak?
 by David Haber
On a new post on her official web site, J.K. Rowling admitted she made a mistake in New York when she was asked, what question have you never been asked that you ought to have been asked? She now says the question should have been, Why did Dumbledore have James' invisibility cloak at the time of James' death, given that Dumbledore could make himself invisible without a cloak?

To me that sounds like the cloak already once belonged to or was used by Harry. Posted by Kate from Germany on May 12, 2007 05:40 AM
Dave: You're probably right, I was just thinking, because Invisibility Cloaks are so rare (Ron says this when see one for the first time) that most Wizards wouldn't ever expect to be seeing one, so they wouldn't learn how to detect them. It may also be very "advanced" magic... Posted by Dave Haber from Los Angeles, CA on May 12, 2007 07:42 AM
I'm not sure if Snape knew Harry was near by because of the cloak, or if he was using Occlumency. If he suspected Harry was nearby, is he able to just use it and pick up on thoughts? There seems to be examples of this throughout the first 4 books in the Potions lessons. Posted by mmc from sa, australia on May 12, 2007 6:58 PM
Ok, first off I think that the cloak being anything that belonged to Godric Gryffindor is ruled out when Dumbledore says the only remaining object that he knows about is the sword. I also dont think that the cloak is adding any special enchantments to harry. As far as it being a horcrux, they stressed how bad it is to tear your soul apart, so why would they do it? I think it is going to be a crucial part of the past but is not going to play a significant role in the future. Posted by Justin Whitmer from Fl, USA on May 13, 2007 8:04 PM
That's brilliant stuff! But there is one question in my mind. Wasn't the subject of horcruxes banned in hogwarts or anywhere in the magic world? The one who tries to create a horcrux would be caught. Posted by VIJAY from Bangalore,Karnataka on May 14, 2007 11:03 PM
What if is wasn't Dumbledore who had James' cloak when he d? Maybe it was someone else from the Order of the Pheonix who needed it to do a mission for the order. Then after they heard the news about the Potter's they gave it to Dumbledore, who then passed it back onto Harry in his first year at Hogwarts. I think it to be the horcrux of Griffindor. It can't be james' because, he wouldn't have ed someone. But Griffindor is a great sorcerer and is the founder of hogwarts. He would have made it during some battle or something (maybe he ed slytherin!) Posted by rathi from TN, India on May 16, 2007 1:01 PM
if it is James's horcrux he would have come alive long ago. Posted by rahul on May 18, 2007 03:00 AM
Only 6 Horcruxes were made. Could it be that James and Dumbledore wanted the cloak safe, so that Voldemort couldn't use it to make the 7th Horcrux?
And in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", Dumbledore said that Voldemort intended to creat another Horcrux after he ed Harry (pg. 402-portuguese edition). Posted by Diogo Gomes from Amadora, Portugal on May 18, 2007 5:32 PM
what makes me doubt that harry is godric gryffindor's heir is that in book 1, when harry is being sorted, the hat hesitated and almost put him in slythherin. surely if harry was related to godric then the hat would have shouted gryfindor before the hat touched his head.
on the other theory of harry giving voldy a big hug then couldnt he sneak up on him without being cursed if he used the cloak. Posted by Mark from n.ireland on May 20, 2007 12:21 PM
Diogo Gomes from Amadora,
Yes, Harry was suposed to be the last horcrux, but he was suposed to be the sexth one, as Voldemort wanted a seven part soul.
It is speculated that Nagini was made a horcrux AFTER the fall of the Dark Lord, probably while in his week little body, under the care of Wormtail. Posted by Emilio from Mexico City, Mexico on May 21, 2007 09:30 AM
James got the cloak from his father. JK said this in an interview. Posted by Claudia on May 21, 2007 12:37 PM
