Who is R.A.B. and where is Slytherin's Locket?
by David Haber
In the dramatic climax of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore and Harry recover a locket from Voldemort's secret cave. Only after Dumbledore "dies" does Harry open the locket and find the note from R.A.B. But who is R.A.B., and where is the locket now?

I don't think so. I think Aberforth has the locket now, before him Mundungus, who stole it from Grimmauld Place.
Isn't it wonderful how there are so many possibilities. Thats what I like about Harry Potter. So much food for thought.

I've been thinking, to get across the lake in the cave, only one wizard would be able to cross, but two would be required to drain the potion.
Regulus Black therefore would not be able to do it alone. He would need a non-magical someone or some one who would not register...
Enter Kreacher... Kreacher would be ing to do anything for his old master and would accompany him. Kreacher woud not register since he is a house elf.
Kreacher would take the potion and Regulus drive back the inferi.
I think the potion might be why Kreachers mind is a bit messed up.
I also think that Kreacher currently has the locket.

Monkeeshrines from Orlando,
I believe that the Room of Requirement does hold one Horcrux, as discussed in other parts of this site, I think it is the Rabenclaw's Tiara, which is placed by Harry on the Bust of an old Warlock? to mark the spot where he hid the HBP's potions book.
Harry remember the Tiara after seeing a similar one on the Weasly-Delacour wedding.

If Kreacher has the locket, maybe he has a "nest" in the kitchens of Hogwarts, similar to the one at the Black house. Or he might have found a hidden place in the Forbidden Forest, if the Slytherin locket on the new cover is indeed resting against burnt wood. I don't know if he would know the implications of the locket, but if he was forced to drink the potion in the cave by Regulus, then he knows the locket is valuable enough to hide, and shouldn't fall into the hands of blood traitors or mudbloods.

Nicelly put Patty, so there is still hope that Kreacher might be useful after all.

The house elf on the UK cover might be Kreacher, under orders from Harry to take him to the location of the locket, which is probably a location we have not seen yet.

I have come to the conclusion that R.A.B is definitely regulus black. only one intelligent wizard could go to the cave and to identify the magical curses and the traits left behind by voldemort. when harry asked dumbledore how he was coming with him if only one wizard could go into the cave, dumbledore said that harry was not yet a wizard because he had not yet come of age so it was ok if he accompanied dumbledore. Now i assume that regulus was not as smart as Dumbledore was, not even half as intelligent as he was so he had to go with a powerful wizard who was not of age or probably not a wizard at all. Who could he have gone with, the answer is kreacher, a house elf has very powerful magical ss in them. They could not open the locket and regulus d but had the locket with him. Harry discovers the locket while staying in 12 grimmauald place and tries to open it but fails, then in the middle of no where he remembers he is a parseltongue like voldemort and hisses open and the locket opens destroying everything around it and almost ing harry.

I too am convinced that RAB is Regulus Black, the timing and circumstances of his fit very well with the plot. I wonder whether if he is , Sirius is able to communicate with him beyond the veil.
I think if Aberforth (Barkeeper of the Hogs Head) does have the locket, then he can't know its significance otherwise Dumbledore would have known that Slytherin's locket had been found and not gone to the cave looking for it there.
Also, Harry remembers the silver goblets that Mundungus has in great detail...surely he would have recognised the locket when he saw it in the Pensieve as being the one they had tried to open at Grimmauld Place? Unless Regulus had disguised it to keep it safe.
Might the locket be in the attic at Grimmauld Place? After all, Kreacher is always up in the attic when he's skulking around.
I too am intrigued about the potion Dumbledore drinks in the cave and whether Regulus is responsible for it or whether Voldemort is?....

"Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"
When I first read this in SS, I was puzzled by the meaning but then the thought came to me that Dumbldore was thanking the elves who were responsible for the feast.
Later on as I learned more about Dumbledore, it seemed to fit: esp. when he was explaining to Harry that the way Sirius treated Kreacher was not respectful and not the way to gain his cooperation. JKR has said that Kreacher has an important role yet to play.
Indeed throughout the series everyone takes the elves for granted (except for Hermione) even though they do all of the heavy lifting behind the scenes and have access to key information. In DH when Harry searches for the horcruxes and prepares to confront Voldemort, he need all the help he can get. This is where Nitwit, Blubber, Oddment & Tweak (and company) can help. Perhaps Harry recall this at a crucial moment.

Not so much about who RAB is as I think most people agree that it is most likely Regulus Black. But a possible theory based on the speech that comes out of Dumbledore's mouth as he drinks the potion in the cave in order to retrieve the (fake) Horcrux.
The potion in the cave is in 'a stone basin rather like the Pensieve' (UK HBP p.530) and this made me think, what if it is a pensieve with a twist. A twist where instead of viewing the memory, you drink the memory and you relive somebody elses WORST memory.
When the potion was originally placed in the bowl it would have been a memory belonging to Voldemort -or at least a memory placed there by Voldemort, so when the potion was removed the memory would have to be replaced. I think it is a possibility that the memory belongs to Regulus Black, and it is a memory of him being tortured by use of the Cruciatus and Imperius curses by Voldemort - I think Voldemort wanted Regulus to his brother Sirius and the Potter's too.
Yet again Voldemort not understanding the power of love - this time the love between two brothers (even if they were not friends)and losing a Eater who avenged himself by stealing the locket.

To go right back to the beginning, if Regulus is RAB then the middle initial can't be for Abraxus because Abraxus was a Malfoy hence Draco's paternal grandfather, his mother was Narcissa Black so the A is more likely to be for Alphard. Who has also been removed from the Black family tree for some reason Sirius doesn't really know.
If drinking the potion does cause one to relive someone else's memory, then Regulus would have expected Voldemort to be the one to drink the potion...the note is addressed to him. Could it be the memory of the event that made him turn against Voldemort? THus giving him a clue that the horcrux has been stolen? I don't know whether RAB would be the object of the torture...the last words are KILL ME...but RAB would have to be alive to have stolen the Horcrux...
RAB was definitely not alone when he stole the horcrux. Dumbledore says that one alone could not have done it. Perhaps it was Kreacher and he was the one who drank the potion....or else RAB knew what the potion was and carried an antidote....pure speculation....I think Harry may find out more about Regulus from who ever was with him and hence where to look for the missing Locket.
