Who is R.A.B. and where is Slytherin's Locket?
 by David Haber
In the dramatic climax of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore and Harry recover a locket from Voldemort's secret cave. Only after Dumbledore "dies" does Harry open the locket and find the note from R.A.B. But who is R.A.B., and where is the locket now?

I just wanted to point out that Abraxas is definitely not Regulus's middle name. The Black family is related to the Malfoys through Narcissa, not through Lucius. Posted by Sunny Christian from Reno, NV on October 15, 2006 11:13 PM
was regulus important enough/ smart enough to even know about horcruxes? Posted by et from ny on October 16, 2006 2:17 PM
Dumbledore's portrait was sleeping, or missing (can't remember which), so Harry couldn't talk to it at the end of HBP. I'm sure he'll ask it some questions later (yes, DD is , not faking).
RAB being Regulus is too easy/obvious... but the fact that the intials change depending on the language (RAZ, RAS, etc) is a giveaway that it is, indeed, Regulus Black.
Whether Kreacher, Mundungus, or DD's brother has the locket doesn't matter... Harry go to the wrong one first, and it'll probably be carried through several chapters as a B-storyline before resolving.
I like the theory that Regulus turned into the basilisk that Harry ed. I don't think it's correct, but I like it. Posted by CPP from NH on October 17, 2006 10:14 AM
Hi, I didn't read all of the comments but I didn't see this one mentioned. Who is someone we know who has a last name with B and is ? Professor Binns. They always say he woke up and continued teaching. Perhaps this was a cover up for what really happened... and he stayed as a ghost to let Dumbledore know what happened! Interesting Idea, but besides the fact that the evidence for R.A.B. to be Regulus Black is overwhelming, I think it's implied that Professor Binns has been for a really long time, much longer than Voldemort's been around... Posted by Dave Haber from Los Angeles, CA on October 17, 2006 5:58 PM
Yeah, Dave you have got a good point. I guess I was just being too optimistic...you know, having Binns there to tell Harry about where the horcurx is. I have been wondering something for a while...can ghosts do magic? And if so why didn't the book say the ghosts were fighting when the Eaters attacked Hogwarts? hey guys...i think R.A.B. is certinly regulus black. remember sirius telling harry that regulus "got in so far(OotP pg 104)". in which matters did he get in so far... maybe he came to know about the horcruxes! Posted by shikkhar from new delhi on October 18, 2006 05:45 AM
one more think i wud like to stress upon is that even if DD and sirius are , he can still interact with them. remember luna lovegood sayingabout her mother "and anyway it's not as though i'll never see mum again, is it?(OotP pg760)" "in that room with the archway (in department of mysteries). they were just lurking out of sight, thats all. you heard them." so harry can still take help from sirius (obviously he can take help from dd through his potrait). Remember that the easiest way to visit Dumbledore's portrait is to visit the Minisrty of Magic and take the portkey Dumbledore created of the statue's head from the public statue and go visiting. Probably best if you go during Headmaster MacGonagle's transformation class though.
I expect them to offer a professorship to Harry to get him back to Hogwarts in the 7th book. Defense against the Dark Arts as Snape's replacement. All the other members of the Order of the Hind (Hindquarters at 12 Grimwald Place) would use Polyjuice Potions to "cover" for him in class. All this discussion of "who R.A.B. really is" completely ignores the possibility of that string of letters refering to a nickname like "Half-Blood Prince" being a mysterious HBP and speculating on Harry's middle name being something florid like "Blooming"! JKR has Reglulas Blacks name mentioned by too many characters in Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince for this not to be R.A.B. FurthermoreI strongly believe that the 'A' stands for Alphard, Sirius and Regulas Uncle. I was wondering I had never heard the theory that Aberforth Dumbledore was the Hogs Head bar tender, but then i searched the net and everywhere was certain..wow i never noticed... i just mean to say that harry can ask for help from sirius about who is R.A.B. as he would certainly know if regulus black is R.A.B. one more thing is that even if regulus is not R.A.B. still R.A.B. is a eater (as far as i think) because the note inside the locket says "to the dark lord" and only eaters call voldy by this name...
