by David Haber

In the dramatic climax of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore and Harry recover a locket from Voldemort's secret cave. Only after Dumbledore "dies" does Harry open the locket and find the note from R.A.B. But who is R.A.B., and where is the locket now?

I think Regulus is R.A.B. He fits the description and if you go to info sights for Harry Potter ie; Harry Potter Lexicon it has the Black family tree that has a relative on the Black side with a name that starts with an A, but I won't spoil it for you. Please look it up yourself. Also, while your on the sight, Javed, this is for you, look up Aberforth Dumbledore, he is indeed the barkeep at Hogshead Tavern.
I think the locket is in one of two places. Either Kreacher still has it in his nest at 12 Grimmauld Place or Mandungus took it when he cleaned out(stole)the Blacks heirlooms. If Mandungus took it, it's highly unlikely he would have had it on him when he was commiting a burglary on another house and was arrested for impersonating an inferi. He either sold it or traded it to Aberforth. In the description in book 6 the barkeep turns to leave as Harry, Ron and Hermione spot Mandungus in Hogsmeade. Aberforth clutches at his neck like he is either trying to hide something or doesn't want to get caught.
Why wouldn't Mandungus meet Aberforth in the Hogshead Tavern? Because he (Mandungus) had been kicked out of there years ago and was told never to return. We do know, he did go back in the Hogshead though, because when Harry and the rest of what would become the D.A. met there; Mandungus was there to witness the meeting! How; you ask? He was the mummy in the corner that kept ordering firewhiskey. He was using a disguise.
There is also a reference in the books about an old hag wearing a baclava. One's in PS when he and Hagrid are in the Leaky Cauldron and again in a later in POA when Harry has breakfast in the dining area at the Leaky. I think this is Aberforths disguise. Remember he is a bit strange and he is a member of the Order of the Phoenix who are watching him constantly at this point so Sirius can't get to him.
Maybe I'm nutters but those are my theories.

Baklava is Turkish desert pastry. I think you meant Balaclava, which, according to Wikipedia, is headgear covering the whole head, exposing only the face, and sometimes only the eyes.

OOPS, Thanks Dave, I couldn't remember how to spell it!

But what would Mandungus be doing with the bar tender at the hogs head when he was banned from going there? it doesn't make any sense whatsoever why they would be talking?!

Unless the hogshead "banning" was just a long-standing cover story, allowing Aberforth and Dung to have a clandestine relationship.

shannon just a quick note. mundungus was dressed as a witch in the corner. harry or ron or hermoine can't remember which acutually said something to the effect that it could be umbridge hiding to spy on them. and dumbledore even told harry that the witch had been mundungas.

but if he was banned and Aberforth and dung were actually friends (or whatever you want to say) why wouldn't he just let him in the bar? also WHY couldn't harry ask dd about R.A.B from his picture in the headmasters office?

Posted by lexi from US on October 12, 2006 4:33 PM

Lexi, Harry didn't do so because he was really depressed (huge understatement but I don't know what else to say) about DD's . It might not have occured to him that he could talk to DD's portrait. But if DD doesn't come back from the or something in the next book, Harry definitely do so I think.

Does anyone think Aberforth knew about the prophecy?

- The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month s...and the Dark Lord mark him as his equal, but he have power the Dark Lord knows not...and either must at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord be born as the seventh month s... -

Remember what Trelawney says in Half-Blood Prince:

- Professor Trelawney had made the prophecy that had altered the course of his whole life, the prophecy about him and Voldemort.

'... but then we were rudely interrupted by Severus Snape!'

'What?'

'Yes, there was a commotion outside the door and it flew open, and there was that rather uncouth barman standing with Snape, who was waffling about having come the wrong way up the stairs -

So Aberforth probably knew as much about the prophecy as Snape knew. This means that Aberforth, Voldemort and his eaters knew half of the prophecy. Now the people who knew the whole prophecy were probably: Dumbledore, James, Lily, (Frank and Alice?), and now Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Now about Dumbledores portrait in his office maybe its just there temporarily. Maybe its like the eaters dark marks disappearing when Voldemort was gone. Or maybe Dumbledore put the portrait in his office himself before he left for the cave (if he had planned his ). He could have done this when Harry went to get his invisibility cloak.

just a quick question - who are Alice and Frank?

Posted by tanya from india on October 15, 2006 05:44 AM

Alice and Frank Longbottom are Neville's parents who were tortured into insanity by Voldemort's followers. That's what Bellatrix Lestrange got sent to Azkaban for.

i do not have my books on hand, but when Harry first went in the Hoghead, I don't think he knew it was dumbledores brother...it said something like "he thought he looked oddly familiar..."

and i do not think it actually stated in the books that it was his brother. but it did describe his build the same way as Dumbledores and it mentioned smelling like goats...

but i do think that, whether it is Dumbledores brother or not, i think he got the locket from Mundungus.
