Unanswered Dumbledore Questions
 by David Haber
These are elements of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that would seem to be related to either the Dumbledore or Snape mysteries, but they have loop-holes or unresovled bits of information, and we're not sure about them and are still checking into them...

I haven’t read all the replies so if some one has brought this up then I apologise for not reading them fully. It is astonishing to me that one of the key discrepancies I have in the text is not payed more attention to. As we all know from back in book one the card of Dumbledore in the chocolate frog states that he is recognised for his work with his partner Nicolas Flamel in alchemy. And we also know that AD is around 150 years old at time of but Nicolas Flamel is 650 odd years old. Now I'm shore a lot of you have seen the point that I’m trying to make now. For AD to help NF produce a philosophers stone in the first place then they must both have been living mortal lives upon til the point of discovery. To me this leaves many questions, it may be a simple hole in J.K.R.'s impeccably detailed and thought out plot or it could be a very important indeed. Personally some of my thoughts are along the lines of AD being able to reincarnate just like Fawkes is reborn from the ashes each time he s. Also it could point toward his decendancy from Gordric Gryfindore. Anyway as it does raise many questions such was he around 500-650 years ago to help NF with his discovery. But if he was why is he only listed as being 150 yeas old or if he is now someone different then why is work from a previous life listed under his current body. To me it seems like a more plausible search into words for some deeper meaning than some of the wild things people are throwing out there. too roo Posted by I R ROY CHELDS from Perth, Western Australia on November 12, 2006 05:56 AM

The other day I was listening to Stephen Fry reading “The Half-Blood Prince” Chapter thirteen THE SECRET RIDDLE.
Harry has another lesson with Professor Dumbledore and on the table is already the PENSIEVE. In the first Memory we learn that Merope, Tom Riddle’s mother had to sell THE LOCKET to Caractacus Burke. The second Memory, Harry is told by Dumbledore, is his own. They enter the Pensieve together and go to the orphanage where Harry is witness how TR reacted when he heard the first time that he was a WIZARD.
When I got to the point where they enter the Pensieve, I stopped the audio-book and said to myself:” Wait a minute, why does it not say that Dumbledore’s Memory was in a bottle”?
Now I got curious and I re-read ALL Harry’s lesson with Dumbledore and guess what I noticed? ONLY in Chapter twenty “Lord Voldemort’s Request is it written that a Memory of Dumbledore’s is in a crystal bottle!
Why only that Memory, where Lord Voldemort comes back to Hogwarts, asking for the job of the “DEFENSE OF THE DARK ARTS TEACHER?
Some of you have suggested that Dumbledore put them in a crystal bottle for safety reason. I cannot agree with that because as we all know Dumbledore is the greatest wizard since a long time. He would not be so careless and FORGET one of his memories in the Pensieve. Even IF he should accidentally forget, until Draco Malfoy let the Eaters in, Dumbledore was sure nobody could enter Hogwarts with all the security on.
If Dumbledore would have been arrested or kidnapped he would of used surely Occlumency so that nobody could of entered his mind > Memory
Very well then, what does it mean? I did not notice that “tiny” difference when I read HBP the first time around. What if that memory in the bottle is also very important (like the one Harry got from Slughorn)
Let’s say Harry has the chance to enter that particularly memory of AD again. Would he be able to follow Voldemort once he left Dumbledore’s office? Maybe Harry would learn what exactly was the reason for Lord Voldemort’s Request? What if he was able to hide a Horcrux at Hogwarts at that time?
What are your thoughts about this theory? Or is my imagination running away with me? Posted by Mistral from Switzerland on November 13, 2006 06:30 AM
Mistral I don't think Harry could travel beyond the scope of DD memory. As I understand it, the pensive only shows the exspirences of the person whose memory you're viewing. I would like to ask one question, Has there been any mention yet of DD ? He had to have one didn't he? Posted by Kevin from Wisconsin on November 14, 2006 11:52 AM

Kevin You are right; Harry cannot travel beyond Dumbledore’s Memory. I went to check on all the interview’s Jo gave on the subject of the Pensieve. There is absolutely nothing to hint that you can follow another character apart of the owner of the memory. At least I did not find anything?
Talking about the Pensieve. I wonder what would happen if Harry put his memory of the fatal night at Godric’s Hollow, into the Basin? It always says, he does not remember anything of the night Voldemort came to the Potter’s house.
And yet…..in PHILOSOPHER’s STONE Chapter two, he dreams of FLYING MOTORBIKES or remembers flashes of green light! In the movie we see the fifteen months old Harry in his cradle, looking up. We can of course discuss if one is capable of remembering things so early in life?
To raise more questions, would it need a spell to pull your memory from one’s mind? Watching Dumbledore in GoF it seems to be a simple act. And was that the former headmaster’s personal Pensieve or had he borrowed it from the MoM?
So let’s assume that Harry gets a chance to put his memory into the Pensieve. He would be right in the room where Voldemort ed Lily! As we have seen in “Snapes’s worst Memory” the “Pensieve visitor” hears and sees everything around the keeper of the memory.
The precise knowledge of that fateful moment could be very useful to Harry. It would also answer the question, if besides Voldemort, anyone else was present!
And no, there is no talk of Dumbledore’s so far. Though we know from Professor McGonagall that is was AD WISH that he wanted to be buried in Hogwarts. Posted by Mistral from Switzerland on November 15, 2006 12:48 PM
It would be an incomplete memory...but still better than he has now.
DD augmented Morfin's memory.... maybe some one could do that for Harry? Posted by Kevin from Wisconsin on November 16, 2006 06:31 AM
J. K. has stated clearly that Dumbledore is . But which Dumbledore? She has not, to my knowledge, stated that Albus is .
Food for thought. Posted by John from Atlanta on November 16, 2006 10:40 AM

I dont think i have ever cried as much because of a book than HBP. i thought about only harry, hogwarts, dumbledore and you know who for days. this site has really given me some hope.
at least dumbledore is in a portrait! i dont know if the people in the portrait are up to date like their past human selves but if they are, could harry not go and talk to dumbledore and ask for help if he needs it? maybe even take him along to godric's hollow? i know it sounds stupid but everything is possible is it not?
now, coming to dumbledore faking his . i think that the portrait doesn't come until the headmaster has stopped being headmaster. i think this because i doubt that every headmaster hogwarts ever had stayed until they d. i am sure many retired. therefore, either dumbledore is really or he has resigned somehow and is now devoting himself to other things?
then the question why umbridge does not have a portrait. i think this could be because she wasnt a TRUE headmistress. she made herself headmistress selfishly. after all, she had to keep her old office if i am not mistaken? she did not manage to get into dumbledore's office, another sign that she was not a true headmistress.
then another idea, not very possible, i know maybe Neville IS the chosen one! it is possible, isnt it? true, harry has defeated/escaped you know how many more times than neville, but just because harry managed to defeat harry as a baby, it doesn't mean he IS the chosen one! after all the prophecy was only labelled Harry Potter (QUESTION MARK!). could it be possible that they just labelled the prophecy like that because they simply assumed this was the easiest explanation?
i would just like to say, jk rowling has done so many amazing things in her career. from being very poor to being richer than the queen, from bringing so many children to read, for creating a world that so many people wish they were part of. Remember what DD told Harry about Morty "marking " his equal.
Harry is the chosen one, I have NO DOUBT that Neville play a major roll in Morty's down fall, and get a little payback on the Lestranges while he's at it. Posted by Kevin from Wisconsin on November 21, 2006 06:20 AM
there is another Unanswered question... I don't know if its already mentioned but.. there is something wrong with the Felix Felicis... In one of the chapters harry wanted to make it but in his book stood that it takes (I thought) 9 months to make or something. but the felix in the classroom was ready for use... Do you see the problem? Posted by Rudi from Haaften, The Netherlands on December 1, 2006 06:45 AM
Since Dumbledore is , then who inherits his posessions? Harry, I think. THen Harry inherit his Pensieve and be able to bask in Dumbledore's memories, therefore causing new revelations. Posted by Koby from New Jersey on December 3, 2006 11:09 AM
Don't forget, Dumbledore still has a living brother, Aberforth. Posted by Dave Haber from Los Angeles, CA on December 3, 2006 11:55 AM
