The power The Dark Lord knows not
 by David Haber
It all comes down to this. The big difference between Voldemort and Harry. The only difference that's really important. It couldn't be more important to the climax of the Harry Potter Septology Mystery. And the reason we know it's important is because J.K. Rowling went out of her way to tell us about it, right out, in plain language, not couched in a riddle, in the very first Harry Potter book.

For this to be possible, there has to be some sort of distinction between "living" and "surviving." Posted by joe y from Bridgeport, CT on July 19, 2007 11:13 AM
"neither can live while the other survives". Currently while both are ALIVE they are not really LIVING. Voldemorte is consumed with ing Harry, and Harry cannot get on with his life until the threat of Voldemort is gone. So the quote is correct. Neither are actually living their lives right now, and cannot until one is gone. Posted by Sharon from Michigan on July 19, 2007 11:58 AM
Perhaps (let's assume) Harry is a horcrux. Voldemort gains all the pieces of the puzzle, extracts the horcruxes, puts them back in himself, and discovers that along with the "Voldemort" part he got from Harry, he also took a bit of "Love", which is poison to his evil ways, and that's what s him. It would give a lovely final battle moment where we the readers think uh-oh, Voldemorts is winning - Harry's a goner, then GET A REPRIEVE which is what JKR said we would get.
