The Mystery of Aberforth

by David Haber

During the interview after the launch of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling said, "There is one member of the Order of the Phoenix that you have not yet met properly, but you will meet them in seven." Is this person Dumbledore's mysterious brother, Aberforth? What do we know about Aberforth, and how is he involved in the story?

Well, you totally convinced me. It's amazing how JK puts all tiny details in the Harry Potter series which don't seem important, but can reveal very much!
And the fact that Aberforth can't read, well.. I'm smart, but my little brother is 11 and he's also dumb.

I have always believed Aberforth to be the barman for quite a while. I didn't read through the 28 pages of comments to see if anyone mentioned it, but there is another important clue in HBP that this is the case.

It seems to me that Aberforth plays something like the Mundungus role for the Order. Due to his unassuming and apparantly unsavory nature, he can gleam information that might be hidden to others.

Could Aberforth and Dumbledore switched before the cave? This would explain Dumbledore's strange rantings as he drank the potion why the Aberforth/Albus said, as he and Harry left the cave, "I am not worried, Harry [...], I am with you."

Maybe the member of the Order of the Phoenix we haven't met yet is not Aberforth as we've all been thinking...perhaps it's Marlene MacKinnon after all...though I've no doubt we meet Aberforth!
