The Mysterious Septology Symbol
 by David Haber
One month ago, on March 28, fans finally got to see the artwork for the covers of the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and intense debate about the meaning of the imagery on the covers immediately ensued. But there is one small, obscure bit of the new images of the Book 7 cover art we haven't yet discussed.

Maybe the trio or Harry, Neville and Voldemort? Next, the line represents a division. Maybe when Dumbledore said, "...in essence divided" this is what he was referring to. Finally, the circle could represent the life cycle and life//rebirth. Posted by Laura from Cleveland, OH on June 14, 2007 11:19 AM
Last night i was standing at the door on JKR's site just staring at the symbol and i noticed stars in the sky through the window. It looked like it formed a constellation. I wonder if that symbol could be like an instrument used to determine a location or how to get there. Posted by Reg from Texas on June 15, 2007 1:45 PM
I think the line running though the middle represents symetry, its something to do with geometry. i thought that was interesting. Posted by Anthony Barrantes from south Carolina on June 19, 2007 7:56 PM
I think it is likely the symbol be used to do something, not just to reveal something. Posted by Kylie from Australia on June 20, 2007 8:21 PM
We've now seen two seperate clues about this symbol, the animation on Bloomsbury's site, where the symbol is carved into stone, and the three objects that are assembled to make the symbol on the desk behind JKR's locked door on her site.
Is it possible that this symbol is a key, that when assembled from three seperate components, and fitted into the carving on a stone wall/door opens the way to... well, there's the rub! We'll have to wait and see... Posted by Goff Morgan from Wales, UK on June 21, 2007 1:43 PM
Hi everybody,
I think these are some interesting theories. I particularily like those with Dumbledore. I think that this sign is located (engraved) on the door of his tomb. Another interesting thing is the one with summoning Dumbledore.
Maybe this be of help: I come from Croatia. The local bookstore allready released their translation of "HP and the ly Hallows" - "HP i smrtni sveci" - in ordinary english "HP and the mortal saints". Perhaps Dumbledore is some kind of a saint? And he indeed is mortal, and ed. But he can be summoned back, because he was such a great wizard.
Well, just a couple of thoughts, but I believe the translation is good enough to be added in the conversation. Posted by Bogdan from Croatia on June 22, 2007 5:22 PM
Now I was looking at this symbol for a few minutes. Does anyone else notice that the left side of the circle is partially covered by the left line of the triangle and on the right side it is not? At first I kept staring thinking it was a trick of the eye caused by the shadows of it, but no. One side of the circle is definitely slightly covered on that left side.....hmmmm it looks as if the light side of the triangle is covering some of the inner darker part of the circle... Now I skimmed through all the comments and didn't seem to see anyone mention this about the symbol...so I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes with this...BTW...I LOVE this website! I was just re reading goblet of fire and i came to the prefect bathroom scene. The room is described as being nearly completle made of white marble! Could it be in this room that this symbol is being displayed? It would have connections with voldemort as riddle was a prefect plus it would be just like Rowling to have harry been in the place before on a competely different plot thread! Could the septology symbol not have something to do with the seven Weasley children? With Ginny being the seventh child in this family and Harry's former girlfriend, would she not be the one to help Harry defeat the Dark Lord? Posted by Helene from Newcastle on June 25, 2007 09:56 AM
if the triangle is azkaban (the triangle shape in the ocean) and the color of the symbol is the color of sirius's soul coming out in PoA, could it be people's souls trapped/sucked out by dementors that's trapped in there? Posted by softball17 from chicago, IL on June 26, 2007 7:27 PM
I think that Dumbledore be able to talk to Harry though his headmaster's portrait as other headmasters/headmistris's have been able to comunicate that way. Posted by Jessie from Australia on July 4, 2007 05:28 AM
Yes, the building is definitely Azkaban. But maybe we are digging a little too deep. Maybe the symbol is just decoration. Posted by Connor K from Rigby, ID on July 5, 2007 5:31 PM
