The Aftermath: We were all correct

by David Haber

Sometime a week before Book 7 came out, someone commented that Harry would die, but then come back. I think most everyone on the site thought it was a silly idea. But I told several people at that time that I thought that just might be the perfect solution, although I couldn't figure out how J.K. could make it work. J.K. did, of course! So, the half of the Harry Potter fans in the world who thought Harry would die were right! And the other half who thought he would live were also right!

Ellen from Pasadena CA,
I assumed that Regulus knew the locket was a Horcrux because Voldemort needed to use his elf. Maybe I'm setting too much store by Voldemort actually being honest, but maybe he told Regulus why he needed to use the elf...

The cover on the UK edition is the part when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are at Gringotts! I also want to say that DH was the best HP book EVER! I can't believe it's over! The ending was a LITTLE disappointing. I think JK should have said something about Hogwarts - whether it was rebuilt or if it got shut down - that amazing battle must have torn up the castle. I can't believe Tonks and Lupin d right after they got married and had a baby! Did you notice they made Teddy just like Harry except Teddy has a grandmother he can live with and other living family? I knew Harry wouldln't . BUT FRED! I'm heartbroken. Overall- BEST BOOK EVER!

it's easy to see how dumbledore beat grindelwald, just like harry beat draco. he ripped it out of his hands.

How does Narcissa know that Harry is not ? How can she possibly pull off telling Voldemort that he is , when he would easily be able to tell that she was lying? Notice that she doesn't even hesitate - she just comes right out and asks Harry in a whisper if Draco is ok. That was the most surreal part of the book for me. How does she know?

To HPFan: We know that Hogwarts got rebuilt, because Harry and Ginny, as well as many others, were sending their children to Hogwarts on the Hogwarts Express in the Epilogue. (PS: I'm heartbroken about the loss of Fred, too.)

Book 7 is really fantastic. event hough there is loss of certain characters the book ended well. from the first i had the opinion that snape was good and i was correct. i feel sad for his . Harry accepts that Snape is one of the bravest man in the world he has ever seen. Its so sad that dobby has to to save harry and his friends. Rowling has gone too far at the end after 19 years. but the end was really good and peaceful. i enjoyed reading the book.

Niven from West Lafayette:
right before Narcissa asks Harry if Draco is alive it says that "she could feel the steady pounding of life against his ribs." That's how she knew he was alive.

OK, I'm into my third reading of DH. Does anyone know what happened to the missing 24 hours between Voldemort's first demise and when Hagrid delivers Harry to the Dursley's? Much has been made of the day's lapse but there was no reference to it in DH. Was it just travel time?

I've still got a few more questions
1) The locked door in the department of mysteries?
2) In the Gringotts vault, when the Hufflepuff cup duplicated in Harry's hand, didn't the Horcrux inside also duplicate?

Posted by Awais from Riyadh on August 11, 2007 01:12 AM

I don't understand why there was seven horcruxes plus the part of Voldemorts soul that was in his body. In the half blood prince Harry said to Dumbledore something like "so there's seven horcuxes" and Dumbledore said something like "no there's six, the seventh piece is in voldemorts body". But wasn't there seven plus the piece in voldemort?:
1. Voldemorts body
2. Nagini
3. Tom Riddles Diary
4. Marvolo Gaunts Ring
5. The Locket
6. Hufflepuffs Cup
7. The diadem of Ravenclaw
8. Harry

That means Dumbledore was wrong, but he didn't seem to notice he was wrong because he told Harry that he was the seventh Horcrux not the eighth. Dumbledore said Voldemort had split his soul in to seven, but he had actually split it in to eight?

P.S.. How did the horcrux inside Harry get destroyed by the ing curse when at the beggining we find out from Hermione that you have to destroy them with other things such as basalisk fangs or cursed fire. If horcruxes could be destroyed by the ing curse then thats what they would have used on all the other ones?

All very good questions. Allow me to attempt to answer them.

Yes, Dumbledore wasn't telling Harry the full truth when he told Harry there were only 6 horcruxes plus the soul fragment in Voldemort's body. But there's lots to remember here.

Dumbledore could not tell Harry the full truth yet. He knew he had to wait for the right time for Harry to find out that "he had to " so that Voldemort could. Harry had to learn that after he had taken the full journey, committed himself all the way to the destruction of Voldemort.

Also, Dumbledore himself admitted he wasn't sure about the eighth soul fragment being inside Harry. It's all areas of magic no one had dared to test before, and he was only guessing (although, of course, Albus Dumbeldore's guesses are better than most people's!)

And finally, technically, Harry was NOT a horcrux. He was LIKE a horcrux, in that he contained as soul fragment of someone else. But a horcrux is a very specific thing, an object taken, and soul fragment made by a and placed in the object with a very dark spell. Harry was a container for Voldemort's soul fragment ACCIDENTALLY, he was not techically ever made a horcrux in the normal manner. So, technically, Dumbledore wasn't lying when he didn't include Harry in the horcrux list.

This ties in with your final question, in this case, a basilisk fang or cursed fire wasn't necessary to destroy the piece of Voldmeort soul inside Harry, those were the rules for destroying a horcrux, the whole thing with the object and the spell, etc. Harry was something LIKE a horcrux, but not specifically one, so the rules for destoying his soul fragment aren't the same.

book 7 ended the way i wanted it to be. although there were s i guess they were necessary. i always go for happy endings, they give me peace of mind and keep me asleep at night.

memorable parts of the book for me: my heart went out to kreacher when voldemort made him drink the potion in the lake, the s of dobby and fred were really a blow, i liked the part when dumbledore opened up to harry his limitations and mistakes in life at King Cross and when harry revealed to voldemort how Snape loved his mom with all his heart made me shed tears. how the wizards, young and old, loved harry and ing to for him touched me too.

of the books i read so far, harry potter has affected me most. although fictional, emotions involved are really true to our day to day lives.

to dave haber thanks for this wondeful site. it really helped a lot to bear the waiting period for book 7. and to the contributors, congratulations! you have made good guesses and i salute you for that! to name a few are: aberforth as the barman, snape being dumbledore's man all along, harry a horcrux and RAB is regulus black.
