The Aftermath: We were all correct

by David Haber

Sometime a week before Book 7 came out, someone commented that Harry would die, but then come back. I think most everyone on the site thought it was a silly idea. But I told several people at that time that I thought that just might be the perfect solution, although I couldn't figure out how J.K. could make it work. J.K. did, of course! So, the half of the Harry Potter fans in the world who thought Harry would die were right! And the other half who thought he would live were also right!

I can't say I wasn't satisied with the ending, but the 19 Years Later passage made me cry how Harry named all of his children after his heroes that d for him. I think there are still too many questions left unanswered. how about a non- voldemort book?

What I don't understand is: why Dumbledore did not borrow Harry's invisible cloak, and go fight Voldy himself? He already had the elder wand and the stone. If he borrowed the cloak, he'd conquer .

I just finished the book last night- here are my thoughts and one or two questions if anyone got something different out of the book:
1. as to what the US cover is- It looks to me like it is Harry reaching to grab the Elder wand as it leaves Voldemort's hand
2. I was surprised at the lack of major (MAJOR) character s but also surprised at the number of seemingly pointless s- did Harry really have to lose something else that he loves- I didn't get the importance of losing Hedwig- or why Tonks and Lupin d- to be honest- their " scene" obviously occuring offstage where we never even know what did it- is very anticlimactic- and seems mean and pointless considering the new baby-
3. At the Kings Cross part at the end- was the writhing scary baby thing Snape's soul, tormented in the afterlife?
4. would have really liked some closure in the epilogue on jobs as others have mentioned- and why was the scar even mentioned? his scar was a link to Voldemort who is really right? Also, where is Teddy living? with Tonk's mom? he comes over for dinner 4 nights a week? is where he is living not a good situation, yet Harry doesn't do anything about it because he doesn't want his sons to share a bedroom?
5. Did Harry really ever use the 2way mirror in any book?
6. trivial question but which side is Slughorn on? pg. 734 US edition says Charlie Weasley was about to overtake Slughorn but then on 735 Slughorn is one of three professors taking on Voldemort?
7. Does anyone else wonder what Lily saw in James- they never really get around to saying how he won her over- I know that part of the book is Harry realizing his father figures aren't perfect, but I never really saw the good side of James
8. i had read that JK Rowling had said someone would come to magic late in life in this book- I expected more out of Petunia- any thoughts there?

Luis,

You asked "Are Aurors needed after Voldemort's ?". I think so. They are basically the police of the Wizard world. Just because the big bad is gone, it doesn't mean that all evil is vanquished.

My question is can Harry be an Auror? I think not, because he needs to stop fighting all together so that the power of the Elder Wand stops with him. As Harry proved in taking Malfoy's wand, the Elder wand doesn't care which wand takes the loss. Any loss by Harry, even with his old wand, means the Elder Wand follows the victor.

To BC from Plano: When Dumbledore got the stone, it was then cursed because it had become a horcrux and trying to use it cost him his life - with some delay thanks to Snape. So he could not have used it as a ly hallow.
Also, he knew that only somebody stronger than himself - with the insights of knowing what was in Voldemort's mind, in others words, Harry, could beat Voldemort. His best bet was then to prepare Harry and not try to do it himself.

First of all, it was Ted Tonks that did magic late in life! (It never said he did, but as Andromeda was chucked out of the Black Tapestry for marrying a muggle and as Ted healed Harry after arriving at there house with Hagrid, he must be the one). Was I really the only one to notice?

Well read it straight to the end (save a 3 hour nap). Great finishing, really magnificent. Yes a lot of the predicted was true (Aberforth as Barman being one of my favourites) and even through the book some things were predictable. But hey, that might also be because we have been reading and rereading and reading again all the previous books for the past years. At somepoint you know how Rowling works, that she plants hints and you simply start seeing them (and that is why this site is so great).

Neville gets the sword out of the head because he shows true courage etc. It doesn't matter where the sword is, it is magically linked to the head, to come to Gryffindors' need.

Hmm, the veil, indeed. I thought Harry was beyond the veil in King's Cross (because of the whispers he hears at the beginning). But Harry never was , it was sort of an in between, kind of near experience, where he could choose to go back to living or move on. You can't go back once your (Dumbledore couldn't come back with him, he was ), so Harry definitely was not . Great scene though.

BC,

Dumblerdore could beat Voldy until all of the Horecruxes were gone...including Harry.

Besides, I think Dumbledore learned to embrace . True, he took a mistep by wearing the ring, but ultimately he learned to look at as the next adventure instead of something to defeat.

well, what a great book, really really amazing.
hey, has anyone noticed that we were all right on Dumbledore's brother too? Well, he actually WAS the owner of the Hog's Head... oh well... really there are no words for me to say anythin about this book that'd make sense.. just... AMAZING! this'll be remembered for centuries!

Ow, one further point, I thought it also quite obvious that it was Voldemort on the ground at King's Cross, that's why Dumbledore said he couldn't be rescued anymore. And as Harry 'woke' up at the same time as Voldemort, I thought it had to be Voldemort,

cheers

I agree with the person who felt the '' scene was straight out of the Matrix movie. Like the elevator at the ministry of magic was from Maxwell Smart (in some previous book, I can't remember) (Although flushing yourself down the toilet was awesome).
I agree with one of the first readers who complained it moved first too slowly, then too fast. But the camping stuff was a bit like Frodo and Sam in Mordor - it gave our heroes a chance to build their characters. And 1000 pages would probably have been too much for most of us fans.

Mary,

You asked "At the Kings Cross part at the end- was the writhing scary baby thing Snape's soul, tormented in the afterlife?" I think it was the fractured piece of Riddle's soul, and they left it there to .

Teddy was raised by his grandmother, but Harry was his godfather. And Harry, with all of the loss in his life, wanted to stay close to Teddy and be the father figure that Harry never really had.

"Did Harry really ever use the 2way mirror in any book?" Yes, the other mirror was in the bar. Harry used it to call for help and Dobby was sent.

"trivial question but which side is Slughorn on? pg. 734 US edition says Charlie Weasley was about to overtake Slughorn but then on 735 Slughorn is one of three professors taking on Voldemort?" Slughorn was a good guy. I don't have my book with me, but I think overtake means "run past" in the instance you quoted.
