The Aftermath: We were all correct

by David Haber

Sometime a week before Book 7 came out, someone commented that Harry would die, but then come back. I think most everyone on the site thought it was a silly idea. But I told several people at that time that I thought that just might be the perfect solution, although I couldn't figure out how J.K. could make it work. J.K. did, of course! So, the half of the Harry Potter fans in the world who thought Harry would die were right! And the other half who thought he would live were also right!

Reader Comments: (Page 14)

Did it ever occur to anybody that Harry and Voldemort were very distantly related?
Harry was the descendant of the Perevell brother who got the Cloak - it said so in the book. And Voldemort was the descendant of the brother who got the stone. Gaunt (Voldemort's grandfather) had the ring on which the stone was placed on, and said that it had been passed down through his family for ages.
If both of these are true, then it means that Harry and Voldemort were related to each other. I don't know if this was implied or whether it was left to be discovered, but I just found it sort of interesting.

I'm one of the kids who have "grown up" with the Harry Potter series, starting to read it when I was in elementary school, and I have finished it at the same age that Harry finished off Voldemort (17).
I have loved this series from start to finish, and I knew that J.K. Rowling would put everything - even the things we questioned - right in the end. I guessed things correct, as many of you did, and guessed things wrong. But I have never felt this way about a book - or a series, for that matter.
It made me think about the abilities that we have as humans: to create, to destroy, to love, to hate (and much more can be said here). But the s that allows one to take these abilities and act upon them - creating a world that we so ingly wish to depart to every time we open a book - is the most brilliant thing I have ever seen. I'm sorry if that sounds a bit odd, but what I am saying is that J.K. Rowling is a prime example of somebody who has acted upon her abilities, and look what she has accomplished.
So in that regard, I must say that my hat's off to her. Not just for finishing a series that took her 17 years to write, as many years as I have lived on this Earth, but for showing us how important Life, Love, , and the importance of completing what was once started really is, along the way.
Oh, and maybe for keeping our hero alive.
And in response to the seemingly untied holes in the plot, referring to what happens to the characters...
I feel that it would seem "important" to write something about them, but give J.K. Rowling time! She has done much for us, and has sacrificed herself and a large part of her life for us. So give her the time to do what she needs to do before making a decision. I also think that the Epilogue was written many, many years ago, as she says she wrote the final chapter to keep herself going, and to remind her of what she had to do, and what she needed to finish ( Much like when Harry Potter kept the broken Horcrux, don't you think?). I feel that the epilogue was more important to her than it was for us, and I feel that it needs to be acknowledged more so.
In conclusion,
I leave you all with the quote from the end of ly Hallows:
"The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All is well"(Rowling, 759, US edition).
"All is well" is good enough for me.
Thank you J.K. Rowling, and Long Live Harry Potter.

PS - I also would like to shout out to David Haber and his magnificent site: yet another amazing example of what one can do with their abilities. Without this, our voice would seem to be under a Muffliato charm. I'm sure this website be as lively as ever in the years to come - serving as a focal point of discussion into the end of the series and beyond.
Also, he kept me - and many others as well - sane between the 6th and 7th book. And for that, I thank him.

I dont think the story could have come together any better!Wormtail and Snape's s could've been a little more dramatic. But other than that, no complaints!

Oh, I forgot to mention that JK Rowling is a TOTAL GENIUS.

To COLUM ROCHE, I agree with you. Although I accept that the book's ending has closed this era of magnificent series, I can't help but think some questions were left unanswered for all of us readers to answer. The Epilogue seem expected, quite a sensible idea, but short. But for instance,
1. What happened to the Dursleys? Did they go back to Privet Drive?
2. Who became the present headmaster of hogwarts?
3. What happened to Luna? Did she became the editor of the Quibbler?
4. Who exactly where the 50+ people in Hogwarts who battled Voldemort?
5. Did George continue his joke shop?
6. Who became the PERMANENT Minister of Magic?
7. What jobs did Harry, Hermione, Ron and Ginny took after they left school? Assuming of course, Harry, Ron and Hermione received their diplomas after skipping 7th year?
8. When Kreacher appeared in the Battle of Hogwarts fighting eaters, did that mean he also escaped Grimmauld place the moment the Fidelius Charm was breached by Yaxley? Or whatever happened to the place anyway after Harry got rid of Voldemort?

COLUM, I think you have an EXCELLENT IDEA. There are still lots of questions (minor or crucial) that need to be answered. Why don't we readers/fans list down those questions? I'm sure it would be very exciting especially as this site was dedicated to topics beyond the pages of the series. Mind you, Rowling might be able to take heed of the fact that she may have indeed closed this volume but left several ideas or theories hanging and make Book8:Encyclopedia of Wizards or Harry Potter and The Things You Ought to Know after Voldemort's .

Anyway same thing for the HP7: It's still the BEST!

To Marjorie of New Zealand. Voldemorts curse rebounded on himself at the end, because the Elder Wand cannot hit its true master.

Also, there are a lot of comments out there saying JK has missed things etc (eg where is Hagrid, well if you read the epilogue, you see that Harry tells his son he is invited to tea with Hagrid)... well I think people aren't reading or understanding properly (this is not, as such, a childrens book), because most stuff is there.

About the epilogue, I think its good, don't need to have more info, JK just wanted to let us know everything was ok and the kids were going back to Hogwarts - its not necessary to know who headmaster is, or where Luna is etc, it would be nice, but not essential, can't fault JK for that.

If Harry and the team had lost the sword. And the sword was with the goblin, how did neivelle extract it from the hat. Confused? or did i miss some lines. Oh, and I wanted to add something I noticed that I found amusing -- remember at an early part of the book, when...ah, who was it...Lupin?...read the book too fast and can't remember, but someone told Harry that he doesn't want 'Expelliarmus' to be his signature move, or something along those lines... and it is the very move he uses that ends Voldemort.

SPECTACULAR!

first off, absolutely LOVE this site and how even after the books are done it keeps on giving!

second i have 2 questions i want answered:

1) JKR has said "There is a character who does manage, in desperate circumstances, to do magic quite late in life, but that is very rare..." Where was this?

2) We learn the exact reason why some people become ghosts when they and others do not. Where was this?

did i miss something in my reading? please help!

That was a BRILLIANT book thank you so much Jo!
I read straight until i finished it with no breaks and wow i cried so much. I knew Snape wasnt really evil and im so happy that Harry lives! Dumbledores past was so amazingly put in! But im sort of confused. When Harry goes over the top to insult Lupin he doesnt see him again until the battle. Did he just decide to forgive Harry? and why was Harry so angry to yell at him?

Posted by Erika from las angeles Calii on July 23, 2007 02:44 AM

To JK: I would say that Harry never helps out the Weasley's because they would be almost insulted/ashamed. I think it's just a general concept -- a lot of people don't like to accept help in the form of money because it is pride-diminishing.

Remember how reluctant the twins were to take Harry's Triwizard winnings?

Posted by Katie T from California on July 23, 2007 02:52 AM

Snape was good! i was so convinced he was evil since i cried so much after ing dumbledore. I absolutely loved Snapes memories with him and Lily as best friends...awww (still crying)

I've read the book in 10 hours, i loved it!
But i have a few questions, did they finish hogwarts after all (ron, hermione, harry) who was the new headmaster, what kind of jobs did they get, what happend to the weasleys and what happend to luna? I also missed the part where tonks and lupin got ed, who did it? After all this book is now my favorite book, the end was nice but still allot of questions.

Loved the story!
