Sinking our teeth into the character of Snape

by David Haber

I've personally strongly believed for a long time, and still do, that Severus Snape is a vampire, or at least, is part vampire. There are clues in all the books that point to this conclusion, over the years, J.K. has (sort of) denied that he is, and yet she continued dropping these hints even throughout book 7.

but would not dumbledore know about snape being a vampire if at all he was?

I think that we're reading way too much into this. I don't think Snape is a vampire simply because it would have had a purpose in the story therefore JKR would have told us or it would have been revealed in the books. And about him flying, Voldemort can fly and he's not a vampire. Plus, it said in book 7 that Snape learned tricks from his master. And I agree with you, Swati, Dumbledore would have known, because it would have been a hazard to the students, like Lupin was.

Ahh but just because Lupin was a werewolf, it didnt stop Dumbledore having him around the students, so if Snape as a vampire, but he could control it, i see no reason why Dumbledore wouldnt still have him as a teacher and keep him around.

Come to think of it, is Snape ever outside in daylight? because i cant think of one time when he is. Maybe because of the sunlight!

I'm not saying that Dumbledore wouldn't have hired him because of him supposedly being a vampire, but I'm saying he would have known and it would have been shown more explicitly and it would have had a purpose in the books. I think someone should ask JKR or post a question on her website or SOMETHING because this is getting a little out of hand. But, she did say something about an encyclopedia coming out in a couple of years that have additional information about the characters that are never mentioned in the books, so if Snape is a vampire, that would probably be a time for her to reveal it.

That is an incredibly itneresting theory, and alot of research has obvoiusly been done on the subject.
But I'm still a bit doubtful about the whole thing, why WOULDN'T Rowling just tell us that? Since all of the books are already published anyways.
But theories like these do provide for an interesting read.

in fact we've seen Snape out in sunlight in the SS. His counter curses save harry from falling from his Nimbus 2000 in his first ever quidditch match.

I never really put much thought into thinking Snape as a vampire.
But now that it has been mentioned...Why Not?
I mean sure the books are already published, the story is over, Harry marries Ginny, Ron marries Hermione (YES) but overrall...can't there be stories behind stories.
I remember when this website was called dumbledoreisnot.com a little over a year ago, i followed it so much. The facts, the exerts, everything seemed real.
Yet, despite that it really was just a way to cope with the loss of Dumbledore.
It allows our minds to expand, think deeper, look harder.
Why not have Snape being a vampire, even though Jo may have had no intention of making it appear that he was.
I still believe that he might have been.

hmm I don't think Snape's a vampire. And even if he is, it's not important to the story, otherwise J.K. would've let known during the books. I think only the thing about Lupin giving a test about vampires is a good one, very very clever thinking! Maybe he is a vampire, but I won't like him different if he is. Oh, I have to say in the movies, I think Alan Rickman plays Snape very, very, well. Who agrees?

I honestly don't think that Snape is a vampire. She actually does introduce a vampire in HBP at Slughorn's Christmas party and it seems that Sanguini (LOVE the name!) really can't help himself, trying to slide away towards a group of students etc. His companion keeps him on a pretty short leash anyway. I think that Rowling used a lot of bat imagery in describing Snape simply because those images reinforce his darker character and tendencies. It makes him appear more menacing. Snape being a vampire and having to battle his appetites would have been too good a story line for Rowling not to use explicitly if he really were a vampire. It would affect the story in a way that Dumbledore's recently revealed ity doesn't. I suppose it's possible that she considered it and the bat imagery is a hangover from that. Although it would really parallel Lupin's story and might come across as a bit repetitive.

I agree with Elizebeth from australia. I do not think Snape is a vampire. I think Rowling describes him that way because he is supposed to seem kind of dark and mysterious which is the way a vampire is seen. I think it is just a coincidence that those so called hints are in the book. I think that it is just more of a way to describe Snape then to say he is a vanpire. Rowling wants us to see the character the same way she sees him. Therefore she would describe him the best way possible, and if that is using bats and batlike qualities which leads to thinking of vampires then so be it.

Vampires fear werewolves and the wolfsbane potion, but Snape made the latter for Lupin, "made it perfectly every month, he kept me healthy" as Lupin himself says in HBP. Snape did his best to protect Lupin in DH as well when he used the "Sectumsempra" spell that accidently hit George.
Snape has a pale complexion, yes, but so has Narcissa Malfoy, who is described to have the look of a drowned person in HBP, with a paper- white face.
Also, when Snape attends to Draco's wounds caused by Harry's "Sectumsempra" he appears to be very gentle and not blood-thirsty at all. A vampire wouldn't have been able to control him/herself at the sight of blood.
And the way poor Severus was ed; it is, I think, not possible to a vampire with a simple strike in the neck, although I'm not sure about that one, does anyone know?

I think that maybe Serverus Snape had bat like qualities but if her were truly a vampire than Nagini's bite wouldn't him. By legend there are only a few ways to a vampire. the source vampire..... or stake through the heart so a snake bit shouldn't do it.... but then again the snake was a horcurx and a cursed item but if that is the case then lord voldemort would be coming back again and we could have had a eighth book. So I think that if you want to read too much into everything then yeah snape could be a vampire but I truly doubt it because he wouldn't be . I also think very highly of Snape and was happy to see him become the hero and not the er he seemed in the sixth book
