Judging a book by its cover
 by David Haber
We finally have images of the covers of the American and British versions of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and if these covers are anything like previous Harry Potter book covers have been, these new covers potentially tell us a lot of what is going to happen in Book 7.

Excellent idea! I completely agree with you on everything except Sirius coming back. As much as I would like it to happen I think it would be a bit silly to just have Sirius come back from the just like that. On the other hand, If Sirius can come back than could Dumbledore? What if the veil goes to a certain place where all people go and the veil is just one too to get to that place? Posted by Zach from Vail, CO on April 14, 2007 07:23 AM
hey gagsy - ur absolutely right.. there is infact a scar on harry's forehead...wonder how no one else saw it.. Posted by deepika from lucknow, india on April 14, 2007 10:09 AM

I guess I can't explain what I mean! Not have Sirius come back from the , but using the two-way mirror (which can be fixed using a Reparo) inside the veil maybe he can connect Sirius, we all know Sirius is and cannot return but maybe they can still speak using the mirrors INSIDE the veil, because Sirius had his mirror on him at all times didn't he?!
I think the veil is that place for the . And because Harry won't be injured when he goes inside he may have some hope returning (without Voldemort).
Glad you like the idea! Posted by Gagsy from Kent, England on April 15, 2007 01:35 AM
Someone said before that Ron and Hermione's robes were very fancy compared to Harry's (UK Child). Well, it looks to me that Harry is wearing a black jumper, not robes! But why are two of the Golden Trio in wizard gear and Harry isn't? Posted by Sophie from Jersey, Channel Islands on April 15, 2007 09:27 AM
excellent ideas from gagsy. specially the one voldemort following harry into the veil. and also that harry not doing avada kedavra curse and instead ing voldemort by sending him behind the veil can fit in this situation. Posted by hassan from pakistan on April 15, 2007 11:18 AM
About the US cover: Is it possible it is the veil room, but we are seeing the battle through Sirius's eyes, and Harry/Tom haven't gone through the veil? Posted by Gene from Waltham, Ma on April 15, 2007 5:17 PM

gagsy & deepika:
as i have said before, the scar on all books SHOULD be vivid, you shouldn't have to search but you should see at first glance. if you do see the shape, it COULD be a hair, and if you still think its a scar, who ever heard of a vivid scar which stands out, which is the same colour your hair? if i'm wrong i'll eat my words.
whoever said about the metamorphagus theory:
JK Rowling has stated before either in an interview or on her site, Harry is NOT a metamorphagus. sorry to burst your bubble.
sophie:
the depiction of JK are that the robes are exactly like dresses. ron and hermione are (if you look closely) wearing dress robes which are like dresses. so harry is wearing black robes. note how they are longer than a jumper/shirt. if you aren't convinced by my explanation of robes being like dresses, remember "Snapes Worst Memory"? he was turned upside down and everyone could see his underwear. i think you have assumed robes to be what they are in the movies, because you don't wear clothes under robes, and if they were like long coats, i don't think anyone would be wearing them
please don't let the movies ruin the vision created by the books. Posted by zoe from stevenage on April 15, 2007 5:47 PM
gagsy has good comments but nobody really noticed that in both the uk and us versions of the book covers the characters are reaching out for, pushing away, scared of, or staring at somthing beyond the cover which possibly means there is somthing else that we dont know about.
also in the us cover all of what every one thinks are people i think are either grave stones or eaters.
plus did nobody notice that on the uk cover all three people are looking at somthing different than the other, but in the us cover the two are looking in the same direction.
and it looks like hermionie is reaching out for something(possibly a horcrux that fell?) Posted by kyla from largo,fl on April 15, 2007 6:26 PM
is it just me, or does voldemort seem to be looking at Harry instead of the thing above them? the ruins look like a colleseum and can this mean the final battle is a formal duel? and could the thing they're trying to get or push away be the secret weapon inside the ministry? i dont know but i just dont see it ending with harry leading voldemort into the veil...this is too easy, and try as i might, i see no scar on harry's forehead! there is a crowd of people sitting behind them?!
Every cover has something specific, a moment from the story that is ideal or important in some way? can we do the same with this cover? comparing what the cover of previous books had to do with what was shown could help us in seeing which part of the story (climax, etc.) this is and help us further discovery the book. the covers are great. In the UK cover on the shield there is a phoenix's face but it has a snake body. I think they are in slytherin's vault and there is kreacher on harry's back. Harry would have taken him because he would know something important, maybe how to operate that vault because his ancestors have been serving the pure bloods, and there is definitely a scar in both versions. i guess the front cover of the ly hallows is showing harry and his friends in gringotts, by the looks of all the wealth and stuff...maybe the elf-like hand shown there actually belongs to a goblin... Posted by sniggy from india on April 16, 2007 12:34 AM
Dvin:
they cannot be reaching for the secret weapon inside the ministry, because, if you remember, the weapon was the prophecy which got smashed. Posted by Zoe from Stevenage on April 16, 2007 1:08 PM
