J.K. Rowling goes Beyond the Epilogue

J.K. Rowling has announced in a new interview with that the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was vague on purpose. She admitted her original epilogue was "a lot more detailed," but now that Book 7 is in our hands, J.K. no longer has to hold back any information about Harry Potter, and has now given us a lot of new details about the story and the characters.

1. Constant vigilance
2. What about all the dementors terrorizing the world? Someone should really take care of that.
3. Dark Magic didn't begin and end with the life of Voldemort/Riddle
4. If the ss of Aurors were to pass into legend and myth, who would fight the next evil tyrant?
5. The Eaters need to learn proper respect now, who better to teach them than Ron and Harry?
I hope Jo answers some more questions soon. I can't find reference to who might be the person doing magic late in life, or who got a new pet. Unless the latter was because of Hedwig, but not specifically mentioned in the book. Posted by Patty from Quincy MA on July 26, 2007 7:14 PM

Patty from Quincy - Didn't Rowling say that Harry would get a new pet at some stage? If so, I assume she meant inheriting Buckbeak. I did wonder if Fawkes would transfer his allegiance to Harry. I'm puzzled about the person doing magic late in life too. I can't remember how Rowling phrased that. We all assumed she meant a muggle, but if she said something like "someone doing unexpected magic" or "doing magic unexpectedly" then maybe it referred to Ron's use of Parseltongue. Maybe the locket had side effects? Or what about Crabbe using Fiendfyre? Obviously the Carrows knew exactly how to inspire him!
And I agree about still needing Aurors. Just because Voldemort is gone doesn't mean evil is permanently defeated. That said, I actually think that apart from the encyclopedia maybe, Rowling won't continue to write about Harry's world with endless spin-offs and prequels. It could just end up feeling like she'd copied her own work and become boring which would be a huge tragedy given her talent and originality. Better to leave us wanting more. I for one am perfectly satisfied and although I am sad in a way that this is over, I don't need a novel about Dumbledore, or James and Lily, or Albus Severus, although an encylopedia would be fun as a companion volume. Better to let the Harry books stand on their own and JKR get on and write something different.
I'm bound to upset someone here who loves them all, but I think the David Eddings books are a good example of an author who just kept recycling the same worlds and repeating stories and characters in series after series. Terry Brooks is another. I'm probably in the minority, but this sort of thing doesn't work for me. I'd prefer to see something completely new from Rowling and go with her on a different journey rather than see her trapped in a Harry loop. If she can do something completely different in that world, fine. But I think the risk is there of her just repeating herself. And let's face it, she can literally afford to take a risk and write something else. Any way, it's up to her. Whatever she gives us is likely to be good, so we should just let her get on with it after she's had time to get her muse back to work. She's got one heck of an act to follow! It would be cool if there was a new series about Harry's kids. Posted by Sill from Florida on July 26, 2007 8:15 PM
i really hope she writes the encyclopedia! even better would be a prequel or something of that sort of thing, reading more about james, sirius, lupin lily and snape at hogwarts and the last time voldemort was strong would be really interesting. rip fred Posted by ce from london on July 26, 2007 8:29 PM
I am completely satisfied with the series. I think it was the perfect ending chapter to the series. It was vague, which is great because it gives you just enough information to let your imagination run with what everyone is doing after Hogwarts. I don't want JK to ruin the feeling of the last book by writing a book that takes place after ly Hallows. The only extra book I'd might read would be something about Voldemort's first reign of terror, and from the perspective of someone obscure in the seven current novels. Anyway, thank you JK, that was absolutely the best way to end the series, I loved ly Hallows. Posted by James from Marietta, Ga on July 26, 2007 9:30 PM
I agree with Donner and Crookshanks73, while I would love to read the encyclopedia, but I think Jo does not need to write any more novels set in the Harry Potter universe she has constructed so well. Jo told the story that needed to be told and she is right to leave us wanting more. That is the best way to finish -- on top. Posted by Beatrice from Abilene, TX on July 26, 2007 10:00 PM
I agree with those who were happy with the vagueness of the ending. The whole series happens in our imagination (unless you count watching the movies, which after rereading the series, I think the world would be better without them) so why not have it continue in our imagination? Happiness lies only in anticipation, anyway, so use the tools that JKR has given us, and create your own prequal or sequal to the series! If she writes more, it only limit our own imaginations. I really don't fancy a prequel. After all we know about the wizarding world and seeing it in the past won't make that much difference. We know about the Marauders and I have no doubt fanfiction come up with some stories about it.
The fun of the Septology was the fact that each book told us new things, gave us puzzles, hints and baffling mysteries. We wouldn't have that. I think a sequel would devalue the books too as it would either have to be some kind of repeat or some excuse to 'fight evil' again - no mystery - even JK would be hard pressed to find one, but as she says giver her time and she MIGHT return to the world, she said never say never. To make it work it would have tob e completely new and different which is possible but not probable.
I think the encyclopaedia is a good idea. I believe someone has said they won't read it, and for specific reasons, but, I think I as it be nice to have all the little details filled in, things that would not ever have made it into the books. We have all created little worlds of our own and the delight is in the minutiae of lives, events, things and places. Posted by Marjorie from New Zealand on July 26, 2007 10:54 PM
I'd love a book on the founding of Hogwarts, or the adventures of Godric Griffindor. Posted by Collin Simonsen on July 26, 2007 11:02 PM
I think I would love any extension to Harry Potter, but I know that doing such a thing might break everything it was built up to be...
But, here is the thing... if J.K. Rowling, somewhere down the road, returns to the world of Harry Potter, by her OWN CHOICE... then do you all believe that she could not surprise us, yet again?
I try not to outwardly hope for such a thing, but if it were to happen, I would not be disappointed; I would assume it were because J.K. Rowling really believed she had something new and exciting to bring to us... and I would be excited!
Who knows, though; perhaps she write an entirely new series and - though I know it is hard to believe - it be BETTER than Harry Potter! All I know is, I read whatever she writes... looking forward to an encyclopedia... should be interesting! Posted by Katie T from California on July 26, 2007 11:24 PM
I want to know who is the head of Hogwarts, the school ever sing the school song again, and what is Ginny's job? Posted by Sirius_man on July 26, 2007 11:36 PM

If JKR write an encyclopedia for the HP series, then I would like to know more about Hagrid and his giant half brother. There are more questions about each and every character in the story but how can she satisfies everyone? I don't understand why JKR had to Lupin and Tonks when she said in her original plan they were not to be ed? I think JKR wanted to create another orphan child just like Harry, Ted Lupin. I have no interest in reading another novel about the magic world again. With her exceptional writing s, I would like to read another book that has completely different topic. I bet with you it be good. About the epilogue, it was too good to be "true". If the ending that obvious I don't think JKR should write it out. What else that you expected when Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny all survived? Getting married and having children! I think she should spend that pages to write about things that we can not guess. Anyway, I loved the HP series and I had reread all of the books more than 4 times. Posted by Allamanda from Burbank, CA on July 26, 2007 11:40 PM
