J.K. Rowling goes Beyond the Epilogue

J.K. Rowling has announced in a new interview with that the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was vague on purpose. She admitted her original epilogue was "a lot more detailed," but now that Book 7 is in our hands, J.K. no longer has to hold back any information about Harry Potter, and has now given us a lot of new details about the story and the characters.

What I think happened to the Dursleys is that after being in hiding for a year, Dudley came of age, and his parents returned to their house, but Dudley got a scholarship to a University for his boxing title. He eventually settled down and got married, while his son ended up being a wizard and was sent to Hogwarts. After getting dissed by some Slytherins, Edward Dursley meets his second cousin, Albus Severus, and they become best friends. At the end of the year, Albus introduces his father to his friend and then Harry meets his cousin.

Of course, Petunia and Vernon didn't approve.

CJ from Utah:
I love your ideas on what happened to the Dursleys! And Vernon and Petunia DO approve: remember, it was wizards that kept their whole family safe and alive during the time of darkness. I think I would have a change of heart towards them after that.

And to everyone, my friend Q has asked me, what happened to the hippogriff? So, what do you all think happened to Buckbeak?

parvios - I, too, wondered what happened to Lee. He needed some recovery time for sure after one of his best friends d, but then what? He seems to like announcing, so maybe he continued his wireless career. I imagine him marring Angelina - his perseverance finally paid off - and having a kid or two himself. Well, that's what happened to the Lee in my mind, anyway...

Ashley - Buckbeak stayed with Hagrid, of course! Both Hagrid and Buckbeak would love it if it went that way. It is the most obvious answer, though, so sorry for my lack of creativity there.

I was thinking about how Jo said in the first interview that Ron would be an Auror, but later she said he went on to help George with the shop... why couldn't he do both? He still had a hand in revolutionizing the Ministry, where better to do that than from both the Auror's office and the most popular shop for magical mischief making? So that's how I take the contradictory statements, that he either retired early from the Aurors and went to help George, or does both sort of part time. (Because Jo never ever changes her mind about things...)

Something I did wonder about George - who did he end up marrying? If it wasn't Angelina (there was always that possibility, too) then maybe that Muggle girl that worked in the paper shop in Ottery St. Catchpole? Y'know, the one he and Fred were flirting with around Christmas in Half-Blood Prince. Maybe.

But, of course, all of this is what goes on in my own imagination, a place where Remus and Tonks are still alive, and have 7 kids (including Teddy) - they parallel the Weasleys, not the Potters. Sigh, if only it really could be.

I knew that Buckbeak would continue to live with Hagrid, I was just wondering if he had passed on yet. What is the life span of a hippogriff, anyway? Anyone got their copy of Fantastic Beasts on them?
Random knowledge: my HP character is Angelina (my friends and I all have characters that we are most like), and it's very weird to imagine her married to anyone. Most likely she married Lee Jordan. I mean look at James and Lily: they weren't very good friends at school but eventually James persisted and they winded up married.
I do think George married the Muggle girl. Remember what Ron said: Granddad Weasley would never forgive you if you married a pureblood. Isn't Angelina pureblood?
That probably doesn't mean anything but..... oh well.
I'm still crying about Fred and I've read the book five times.

Ashley Ross from Missouri:

I have to say that although Petunia and Vernon DID go into hiding with wizards, they are still pretty freaked out by them.

i have read the 7th book. its really awesome. but i wonder, why harry didnt keep his name his son Sirius? He is the real hero and harry's godfather... and we need a good end for neville (marriage, friendship)...

Posted by deepika from tamil nadu on August 19, 2007 9:50 PM

This is what I think happened (it has nothing to do with what J.K said happened and if it does it's coincidence).

Harry is head of the Auror office. His protection is the only thing that kept Draco out of jail and Draco, grudgingly, accepts it. Scorpius ends up in Gryffindor, becomes friends with Albus and eventually marries Lily. Draco also has another child, Narcissa. She becomes a Healer, like her mother - Rhiannon. Draco trains owls at Eeylops Owl Emporium. Draco likes owls. Scorpius becomes D.A.D.A. teacher.

Lee ends up hosting the leading Wizarding Radio show, Potterwatch (I always hated the Wizarding Wireless Network).

Hermione is the head of a new Department at the Ministy, People Uniting Kindness to Elves. Ron thought of the name. Ron is working full-time at Weasley Wizard Wheezes. The whole Weasley family is very rich now because Ron, George, Bill and Charlie all have good jobs, Percy is Senior Undersecretary and Arthur is now head of the Muggle-Worthy-Excuse department in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes.

Luna runs the Quibbler as well as being a fantastic naturalist.

Winky marries Krecher and now works for Harry. They are both free to leave at anytime, and can basically do whatever they want, however (to the frustration of Hermione) they both stick with Harry. They are very fond of Lily.

Hagrid remains Care of Magical Creatures Professor and Fang lives to be very, very old, pretty much immortal, as I refuse to let him .

Teddy is not a werewolf.

I'm quite surprised that people want a book on Albus Severus. One of the strenghts of the HP-books is that Harry almost always faces mortal peril in the end. If the books only would contain all the things he's up to (sneaking out, helping friends out, wandering around at night...), I think they'd be less charming. To write a good book on Albus Severus would mean JK has to come up with dangerous situations again. And don't we all think Harry has suffered enough losses yet? At least I do.

But I'd love a book on Sirius. Wonder why there's no mention of a girlfriend (I imagine him being the cutest of the Marauders and in my imagination he doesn't look at all as the actor in the films). But on the other hand, perhaps a book on him would spoil it all. I've come up with my own theory (his cousin Bellatrix doing something nasty to his girlfriend...), imagination is such a lovely lively thing.

All the ideas and comments are brilliant, or at least very creative. Kudos to you all who have given your 2 cents. Of course, I add mine to the rest of the bank.

But first:

Hannah - Love the Australia theory. My only gripe, I have a weakness for women with australian accents, so I dont agree with it {smirk}.

CJ from Utah - absolutely amazing theory on Dudley. That in fact would make great sense, and a great reunion!

Conner K of Rigby, ID - You asked why Neville was the only person to do something when Voldy showed up with Harry's supposed body. Please remember that Harry did in fact have a talk with Neville about the snake, and his order to it. That being said, when voldy showed up, so did his snake, and while everyone else was in shock and awe regarding Harry's (supposed), Neville remembered what Harry said, and that is the reason he advanced before anyone.

The Epilogue: Most people hate the fact that it was so vague, and wonder why it was even in there. I have come to only 2 possible reasons. 1) Reflecting that 19 years have passed, and everyone is settled down, she states something very key here that most have ignored. Harry's scar has not hurt during this time. This s any other writer from trying to resurrect Voldy back from the during that time. So with this vague epilogue, she was able to seal her Harry Potter series to her, and only her to be the appropriate author of the books. So regardless of what people think, the epilogue was needed to state that Harry did in fact Voldy, and was actually able to enjoy his life. 2) For some of us, its enough, because our imagination take over. For others, an encyclopedia is needed. Jo obviously felt obligated to make sure to complete the actual books, but an encyclopedia she can take her time with. It com in due time, all the while she can actually enjoy some time to herself. And i think everyone agrees that its very well deserved timed too! When it comes out, I plan to buy it...just because. My greatest question was answered when Voldy d.

The Malfoy Theory: Due to Narcissa aiding Harry when asking if her son was alive, and the fact that Lucius did not attack with the other eaters (primarily because he did not have a wand), I think this is what actually kept them out of Azkhaban. If anything, I believe they were shamed in the wizarding world, and they finally swallowed their pureblood pride with this being that Harry did save Draco...twice. The nod that is shared between these two rivals in the epilogue I think is more of a respect factor then anything.

The Next Series of books revolving around the children:
Horrible idea! My reasoning, she brought closure to the evil that threatened the wizarding world. If the eaters get free and rise to power, that means the ministry of magic go under hexes, the giants aid them along with the dementors, and they want to avenge their leader and go after harry potter... Gee, where have I read that before? Only one series that I have read was ever able to do a continuation like that, but it worked only because there was quite a few of 'what ifs' that were left in the original series (Dragonlance for those who have no clue what im talking about). Don't get me wrong, I love the books and would love to see something come about. But it would have to be something different and fresh. In the simplest terms, It would have to be something as Original as the first Harry Potter book.

Neville and Luna: Its up in the air. Yes, they would be a good match together. Who knows, perhaps when Hagrid retires from teaching Magical Creatures, Luna can take his place, and a spark may happen between Neville and Her.

The Dursleys theory: I really, really like CJ from Utah's idea of Harry and Dudley meeting again down the road because both of their children are magical. It can even go a step further, and when Petunia finds out that her grandchild is magical, she can recollect the entire thing to Dudley. He in turn, shuns his parents and finally comes to realization that his attitude toward Harry during his entire youth was just horrible. Dudley can further get a better understanding as his child tells him stories about the 'Great Harry Potter' and his fight. Thus, making a reunion all the sweeter, and dudley giving Harry the respect and love he has deserved all these years(after all, one dursley is better then none)!

Albus Severus Potter... The meaning behind the name.
Now, many people have very mixed emotions about Albus having a middle name of Severus instead of Sirius or Lupin. Albus was in fact named after two of the bravest men Harry had come across. Albus of course is self explanatory, but a very logical choice. Yes they hated each other, yes Severus wanted Harry to fail, and by all never gave harry assistance as most people did. But what everyone forgets is Severus did something that no one else did. He protected harry out of Love for Lilly. Everyone felt obligated to harry because they in one way or another were connected to his parents in a positive way. Snape on the other hand was the complete opposite. The fact of the matter is that Snape did everything he could solely on the love he had for someone from his past, and to not give up that dedication to that person, that does make him incredibly brave. I still hate the man, and am glad he is , but its good to see respect was given to him by giving Albus his middle name.

To Dave - The person behind this website: I would just simply like to say thank you. This website was given to me by a friend a few months after books 6 release. I was blown away by the theories and just the detail of things. I have enjoyed coming to this site again and again to read up. I do hope if a new series comes out, that you once again follow that as true as you have followed this one. Above all, most kudos to you sir.

I know this probably won't happen, but I'm a huge fan of Luna and would like to know alot more about her life at Hogwarts and after it. We don't really know that much about her, if you think about it. She isn't even introduced until her fourth year at Hogwarts. And what is the name of the person she marries? I like to think that she had five kids and named them Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville after her first true friends. I also like to think that one of them married a Weasley or a Potter (the kids).

I think that Harry Potter and the ly Hallows was one of the best books in the Harry Potter Series. While I agree that it would be great if JK Rowling wrote an encyclopedia I don't think she should be criticised if she doesn't. Seven amazing books are enough. I would love to know about how the dementors and other magical creatures like house elves came to be. I heard a rumour that she was publishing her notes which tell the story of their evolution. I think that Harry didn't name his sons after Lupin because that's more the sort of thing that Teddy do if he has kids and that Harry didn't name a child Sirius because he knew that Sirius would understand him naming them after his parents and the two men who so carefully protected him at Hogwarts for his entire life. I'm desparate for a happy ending for George, Winky, Luna, Neville, Neville's gran and a million others.

This stuff is awesome! I'd like to know, though, what happened to Teddy Lupin... Is he a werewolf? Because Lupin said he knew that Teddy/his child would become a werewolf...
