Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 and 2

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is dense with information that is crucial to the overall story. It's definitely too much to stuff into a two hour movie.
There are many challenges in adapting a novel or series of novels into scripts and movies. Plot lines are always reduced and/or eliminated. The work that has been done so far on the Harry Potter series has had reasonable success. The millions of dollars of revenue prove that the Harry Potter Fans will pay for anything HP, but will they pay for two movies made from one book? If the Studio thinks fans will not pay for and sit through one longer than average movie (3 hours plus, a rule broken successfully by the Lord of the Rings movies), will it be possible they'd think fans will happily pay for two films?
So, do you think it's possible that the final Harry Potter adventure, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be made into two movies? And if it is, where would you end movie number one and start movie two?UPDATE! 3/12/08: Producer David Heyman said last night that It will be officially announced soon that book 7 WILL BE TWO FILMS! Totally agree with every one who said the actors should read the books. Too late now for a new Dumbledore. He does seem to just go through the motions. I would love to see Judi Dench as Neville's grandmother. Could you not just picture her in the battle scene when she arrives and must find Neville, even if it is just a cameo appearance? The movies have portrayed Hogwarts as becoming colder as they progressed. But Harry has always been able to see it as "home". I'm not sure if we'll see Dobby. JK made sure Kreacher was included in OoTP because he was crucial to the plot in DH. So I imagine he would be the one we see in the DH movie. As avid book fans, we know the role Dobby has played in Harry's life. But he was not to be seen that way in the movies. Love the discussion as always. i think that if there are 2 movies the break point should com when he trio enter school. the whole battle of hogwarts should be described with every detail in the second movie. Posted by mubeen from india on March 2, 2008 10:57 PM
Personally, I don't understand why we're worrying about the ly Hallows movie, because the Half-Blood Prince isn't out until November and its only what, March? Oh, and a reminder to all, March Forward and Fall back, so Clocks go forward one hour on March 9th in the US. Posted by Tonks from Nymphadora, Tonks on March 3, 2008 3:52 PM

I wouldn't mind a long movie even if it doesn't have an intermission. Two movies would be like some kind of dramatic television show.
I was kinda rooting for a second movie cut (if that was how they did it) to be after Dobby s, but I doubt that they're even doing that scene. They'd probably have a run-in with Snatchers and then Disapparate and go to Lupin's and (if they're doing the whole thing with Remus and Tonks) see the baby, then go to Gringotts with Gornuk, who they set free when getting away with the Snatchers, along with Luna and maybe Dean. Then they do everything else. So the best place for a movie cut would be just as Harry and Hermione Disapparate from Godric's Hollow, and the second movie would begin with Harry's dream as Voldemort ing his parents. That would be so cool!
But I'd still want it all to come out in one movie because my parents may let me see the movie after school, but never the midnight premiere once school actually starts. And besides, two different movies would be kind of confusing for people who only see the movies. Everyone would call the second part of seventh movie "the eighth Harry Potter" and put all of us maniacal HP fans to shame. But then, since the actors haven't read the books, there may not be much we can do about it.
Hey, just in case any of the actors or the evil director is reading this, hi, help enforce healthy literacy! Posted by C.J. from Utah on March 4, 2008 12:04 AM

thanks tonks form nymohadora, tonks on that reminder about daylight savings. by the way, i know it's only march, but time just pass by and the next time you check your calendar, you'll be like woah, it's already april! i'm in my first year of middle school and it feels like just yesterday, i felt like i was going to in sixth grade. our njask test is just around the corner! so, as you can see, november be here in no time, and you won't even notice. Obama or Clinton become president and the half blood prince be out in theaters. then, a month go by with actors and getting married and all that sort of junky gossip, and then you're going to be back to wondering about the DH. Ever think of it that way?

I don't agree that the breaking point should be where the battle of hogwarts is, because i know that fact that harry s and comes back to life is important and all. and that narcissa malfoy becomes all little-miss-daisies-and- daffodiles, but there's going to be too much in the beginning part. They should describe every detail in the battle of hogwarts and all, but they should break it earlier. just an opinon.

they can't cut out dobby! he loves harry. absolutely adores him. dobby does , and he is a big part of the HP trilogy. after all, he was the one who told harry that there was going to be great danger at hogwarts in the chamber of secerates. dobby do anything for harry, that's for sure. I think two movies is a must. There isn't a length too long for the last movie. but if two is a must i think the break should come after they bury Dobby. They should zoom in on the headstone that harry makes stating "HERE LIES DOBBY: A FREE ELF". and then fade to black "TO BE CONTINUED". Maybe add Voldermort laughing. The longer the better. I think it would be a huge improvement if they split movie 7 up in 2 pieces, simply too much happens in the book to stuff in only three hours. Posted by Jasper from Holland on March 5, 2008 07:21 AM
I hope they seperate it so they can compact more detail Posted by Liagh from noodleton, usa on March 5, 2008 3:18 PM

personally i think one long movie would be the best. two seprate ones would just be too much work. Posted by hermione from hogwarts on March 5, 2008 5:03 PM

Well, this is what happens, when a US company does a British film. They cut it to peices. I was hoping the Lord of the Rings triology would set a new standard in movie story telling. Apparently Warner Brothers, like the rest of my country, is still doing business like it was 1950 - keep it short and what they precieve as "sweet".
I also agree with the comments about this new Dumbledor. He seems too cold to be the real Dumbledor, and his protrail of the headmaster, does not project the image of someone who is extreamly smart. On the contrary, I got the image of your standard half witted dull beauracrat.
I also agree with the message about Chris Columbus doing the final movie. The story is about hard times, yet Columbus made Hogwarts seem not only real, but a warm and safe place despite what was going on. And the old Dumbledor also projected an image that HE was in charge at all times. I don't see that with the other movies, thus making Hogwarts seem COLD and steril as any public school system we have here in the USA.
And finally, Yes; the final movie must be done in 2 parts, and done competely. Anything less is a crime against the art of story telling.
Oh one more thing. I would have sat for 4 hours to see the complete version of all of the movies, and I wouldn't have mind paying a higher ticket price too. I don't mind paying good money for good entertainment. Posted by Bumbledor from Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 6, 2008 10:13 PM
