Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 and 2

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is dense with information that is crucial to the overall story. It's definitely too much to stuff into a two hour movie.
There are many challenges in adapting a novel or series of novels into scripts and movies. Plot lines are always reduced and/or eliminated. The work that has been done so far on the Harry Potter series has had reasonable success. The millions of dollars of revenue prove that the Harry Potter Fans will pay for anything HP, but will they pay for two movies made from one book? If the Studio thinks fans will not pay for and sit through one longer than average movie (3 hours plus, a rule broken successfully by the Lord of the Rings movies), will it be possible they'd think fans will happily pay for two films?
So, do you think it's possible that the final Harry Potter adventure, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be made into two movies? And if it is, where would you end movie number one and start movie two?UPDATE! 3/12/08: Producer David Heyman said last night that It will be officially announced soon that book 7 WILL BE TWO FILMS! The producers explained their decision was based on the fact that the final book has no extraneous sub-plots that could be cut so everything in the book had to be in the film(s). Since the story not only beats a straight path to the end of the story but ties up all the loose ends found throughout the series, two films are really necessary to include all the necessary details. I can't think of any chapter that could be eliminated nor any character that could be left out. Where to break the book is the greater challenge, I think. And, also whether the break is at the end of an event or leading up to something is a very difficult decision. My personal opinion after several re-readings is that the flight from Godric's Hollow might be both a culmination and, depending on how it's portrayed, a springboard to the second part of the book. Time wise, it's also a good mid-point: the first part, movie 1 would cover the flight from Privet Drive to Harry and Hermione's escape from Godric's Hollow while the second film would cover the return from Godric's Hollow to Harry's triumph over Voldemort. Although I'm not really sure of the dates, I'd like to see the two films identified by dates and not DH part 1 and part 2, so the titles would read, "Harry Potter and the ly Hallows-July 28(?) to December 24, 1997" and the dates for the second film would go from December 24 to May 2 and beyond. Gosh, I hope they don't leave out the epilogue! Posted by Hannah from Los Angeles on May 19, 2008 10:47 PM
How do you think they're going to do the epilogue? Are they going to try to get Daniel to look older or get another actor? I kind of imagined "older Harry" to look pretty much the same except for maybe a broader chest and more of a fatherly kind of thing. Is Daniel that good of an actor to play an almost forty-year-old Auror? Does he even want to? Posted by C.J. from Utah on May 20, 2008 8:01 PM
I think that they need to get different actors for the epilogue. I don't think Daniel be able to play a forty-year old auror very well. Do you think that they could use the same actor who played James Potter to play 'older Harry'? Posted by Mike from Wales on May 26, 2008 06:21 AM
as a hardcore hp fan, i would definitely sit for a 2 part movie at 3hrs each. a lot of the last 3 movies were unfortunately hollowed out to by, surprise, surprise, not by the directors and scriptwriters but the movie company itself. they were thinking a whole heap of moviegoers wouldn't have read the books and so wouldn't know the difference. wrong! yes, a lot of them didn't know hp from their poopchute but who did they go to the movies with? most likely than not, someone who did! now, if it's up to me, i'd replace michael gambon with christopher lee, cast tilda swinton as narcissa malfoy (they should have cast her as bellatrix), dame judi as granny longbottom, and sir ian mckellen as aberforth. I would also cut it at the scene where they bury dobby. the best setting and the perfect turning point. Posted by deathly hollowed from australia on June 2, 2008 01:15 AM
I think they get another actor, to play older harry. Otherwise it wouldn't really be credible or proffesional. But I wouldn't mind if they left out the epilogue, I didn't liked it in the book anyway. It was too fan fiction-like for my taste. So I hope they leave it out.
But I am glad it is a two-parter, so they don't leave half of the book out as in GoF. Posted by Claudia from Netherlands on June 2, 2008 03:22 AM

wow, its amazing how many ppl posted comments for this one.
but i think it should be one long long movie. i dont care if it is 6 hrs. i want the story to be there. i want it to be exactly like the book, and i dont want any cuts or any lame attempts at humour just to entertain the people who havent read the books. harry potter is no longer some random kids story. its now darker and more mature than ever before, and id very much like the movie to display this.
worse come to worse, there might be a problem with dvds not being able to hold a movie as long as 9 hrs of high-definition quality [though i doubt very much this is an obstacle that cannot be crossed], in which case it have to be 2 movies. i dont mind this terribly, but, as many ppl agreed, there shouldnt be a long gap between the release of the two [or 3] parts.
all said and done, i want a complete story, top-notch acting, and harry-potter-style sense of directing, and most of all, the right effects and interpretations in character. Posted by Ayoub from Kuwait on June 3, 2008 07:21 AM
and yes, i agree that the epilogue would be better off left out. like Claudia from Netherlands said, it was trying desperately to gain the approval of fans. it was a bit overdone, i think. didnt have the mature sense of the rest of the book. Posted by Ayoub from Kuwait on June 3, 2008 07:24 AM
I disagree that the epilogue should be omitted: It's an important part of Harry's whole story. I like the suggestion of Dame Judy's being cast as Granny Longbottom. I wonder if JKR and/or the HP movie producers are aware of the opinions expressed on this site. Posted by Alice from Milton on June 11, 2008 06:01 AM
I´m sorry, but how is the epilogue important to the whole story? It doesn't really say anything we couldn't have guessed, I think the information that J.K. shared in the interviews after book 7 was more important. I wouldn't really like that as an ending. I wish they made the Harry Potter movies exactly like the the books. In the 5th movie they didnt even have any quidditch! The movies would be extremley better if they put everything in the movie even if it had to be 2 movies or 3 or more hours long. For an example the Titanic was 2 tapes long. I was a little dissapointed with the 5th movie because it missed so much. Posted by Emily Kearns on June 25, 2008 07:21 AM
The only use of the epilogue was for Harry to tell his son (Albus Severus Potter) that snape was the bravest man he ever knew. That line could be inserted somewhere else at the end of the second movie. I agree the epilogue should be cut out of the film. This would save time for all the other impotant events that should not be cut out or changed. Posted by Anonymous from Arizona on June 25, 2008 10:48 AM

I am glad to hear that it be 2 films because i really do not enjoy 3, 4, or 5 because their plots are completly rushed. there are loads of IMPORTANT things in their plots that no one would ever guess unless they read the book. no granted most people do read the books first but still, I hate having to describe it in depth cause my brother didn't get parts of the movies. I also like Chris Columbus waaaayyy better as a director. 1 and 2 are SO true to the books. Im not say the movie has to or even should be identical but Chris jsut does such a better job.
ummm the epilogue also confirmed that Harry and Ginny and Ron and Hermione actually stayed together and these weren't just teenage relationships. I'd say that is important. but yes even though i really enjoyed reading the epilogue, it may be best just to keep it in the book. I do really wish it was longer though, but that may just be because I didn't want to ever finish the last Harry Potter book....:) Posted by Kyate from Milwaukee on June 27, 2008 12:02 PM
