Dumbledore's Horcrux
 by Jan-Marie Spanard
How does a wizard learn about the existence and properties of Horcruxes? Who knows what they are, how to make them, what they can do? What wizard would make a Horcrux? Under what circumstances? And for what reasons? And why are they so evil? Hermione is working very hard to answer these questions. As Hogwarts virtual library search-engine, she is coming up empty. But Tom Riddle did it, somehow.

Atop the tower, talking to Malfoy: "I don't think you me, Draco. ing is not nearly as easy as the innocent beleive..." Perhaps it's coincidence, but the wording of that remark suggests strongly that Dumbledore knows how 'ing' feels. Therefore it seems likely that he has had the opportunity of creating a Horcrux. I think Fawkes as a Horcrux would be a choice typical of Dumbledore, his 'immortality' stored within something that is itself naturally 'immortal' and excedingly loyal. Very impressed with your theory! I hope its right! Posted by Adam Howard from Nelson, New Zealand on September 18, 2006 8:05 PM
What Mark said about the sorting hat was interesting but I don't think Dumbledore used it for a horcrux. 'The founders put some brains in me' and from the second book, 'Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain' (Mr Weasley on Riddle's diary, which turned out to be a horcrux). Perhaps the sorting hat has always been a horcrux, maybe using a bit of each founder's soul. Although that would involve all four founders committing s. Slytherin may not be above that but I can't see the other founders doing that. Something to think about though. How else could the hat write songs and sort people without a brain? I really doubt the sorting hat is a horcrux. First, lets assume that the horcrux would have to belong to either one or all of the founders of Hogwarts, or Dumbledore. The founders basically embody that which their houses admire most. Slitherin hated following rules, and only allowed pure breeds, so we could assume he would create a horcrux, but the other founders don't embody anything near the right characteristics to create a horcrux. I think the hat has brains because of very complicated spells put on it from some of the best wizards ever known. The founders of Hogwarts had the capabilities to make something intelligent, especially intelligent enough to be able to write songs...
I highly doubt Dumbledore would have made the hat a horcrux for himself, simply because there are far better things, with more significance and symbolism, to place a horcrux in. I love the theory that Fawkes is a horcrux, since he is basically invincible, ever lasting, etc.
On a side note, I do think Fawkes is a horcrux. I don't think it is a coincidence that Dumbledore's patronus is a phoenix, and his animal companion is a phoenix. Dumbledore stands for that which is eternal, wise, and strong. I'd like to make a good point to close my reply, and that is about Dumbledore's . Not a lot of people make this point, but it was extremely important when I read the HBP. Remember when Dumbledore's body at the end of HBP is on fire, and there is a lot of fire around where he is buried? I took this fire to represent the flame of a phoenix. "From the flame a phoenix is reborn." I bet you anything that this is a hint to us that Dumbledore reawaken, just like fawkes would, and become strong and agile once again. When fawkes s, he grows and becomes stronger than when he d. If Dumbledore does embody the phoenix, which I think he character does, he should come back even stronger than before. there all sorts of evidence (my lil bro is the real hp fan, but i've got some theories) dumbledore is buried in a magic sarcophagus, on magic ground, in magically produced flame, and his familiar is a phoenix. oh, he's coming back. he might have been able to put himself, or he could have just created a horcrux by ing fawkes, knowing full well he'd be back in a few hours. snape and dumbledore's final exchange was pure theatre. dd wouldn't beg or plead, he's gryfindor through and through. most importantly: in addition to not ing harry, snape was really showing harry how to defeat voldemort: 'nonverbal spells' and occlumency. at this point, noone on the dark side doubt snape, placing him perfectly to betray voldemort at the point in the final battle where dumbledore and harry are *just* about to defeat him.
hope you still like the book after i've ruined it! Posted by colin on September 21, 2006 10:15 PM
I'd just like to add, for those who believe that the Portrait must mean that Dumbledore is , that the portrait is *genuinely* asleep. I don't think this is entirely co-incidental.
It led me to believe that there is something different about that portrait. Posted by Alex from Gloucester, England on September 22, 2006 05:07 AM
Ok i just read through the dumbledores horcrux theory and i have an information i think proves the point. In book 5 Harry Potter and the order of the Pheonix, when Dumbledore faces Voldemort he sas to him that there are worse things then , which i think that he was thinking of his and voldemorts horcruxes. Dumbldore is little too old to stay alive and so healthy dont you think? So he probably did make a horcrux or he might made his own elixir of life, which is possible i mean he is the great wizard, and his old friend had one! i think that it is very much possible that dumbledore has a horcrux.slughorn says that horcrux is an evil thing-but i suppose it's the ing that is evil and dumbledore does the ing for a good reason.perhaps ur soul is ripped when u & dumbledore might have got the idea when he s as his soul is already ripped.u CAN'T rule out this possibility if u know jkr. correct me if i am wrong, but it does not say in the book that the phoenix flew out of the tomb in HBP. it merely states that harry thought he saw a phoenix fly joyfully into the blue. it does not say if it came out of, or even flew over. I dont believe that the phoenix is a horcrux. i do however believe that it come to harry's aid again due to the fact that he told minister of magic that he is dumbledore's man through and through. and also, i believe someone wrote about how harry defeated professor quirrell in book one. it never says harry ed quirrell it says voldemort left him to . so i believe harry is still an innocent. Reply To Claudia (There is a flaw in this theory of a horcrux. It says in the book, or the British version, anyway that he is famous for his "defeat", not "ing" Grindlewald.)
My friend, you have not seen a flaw in the theory, you have spotted evidence.
I have been told the word "ing" is used in the American Version, but it was changed to "defeat" for the English version.
Why? Because it gives away too much, JK Rowling could forsee people decomposing the books for clues. That I believe is why she changed the word. Posted by Stephen from Manchester on September 27, 2006 1:55 PM
hey Stephen it does not say "ing" in the American version, it also has "defeat" I just read that part again just to make sure. Posted by tonya from cordele ga on September 27, 2006 9:23 PM
