Dumbledore is dead... again
 by David Haber
Almost exactly 4 years ago, as we all read the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince together for the first time, we experienced the death of Dumbledore, and this site became into being, as it was originally known as dumbledoreisnotdead.com. And now, with the release of the movie, we're reliving it, all over again.

But why then did they make Dumbledore drop off Harry in that pond quite a few yards away from the Burrow, all on his own - whereas in the book Dumbledore takes extra care to deliver him on the Dursley's doorstep, and warns him not to wander around on his own while staying at the Weasley'sfor the sake of the sacrifices they are already making? I think had they been true to the book there the threat that's been put on the Burrow and the outside in general would have been clear anyway, saving them valuable minutes.
By the way - thank you, sm, by the way, for your detailed summary of the DH cast! Personally I am hellishly looking forward to Bill Nighy as Rufus Scrimgeour! Posted by Siena from Nottingham, UK on July 28, 2009 07:18 AM
On a second note regarding to what you wrote, sm - i think it would be a true shame to leave the Dursleys out in DH - it is quite important to include that Dudley is finally showing respect towards Harry and redemption for his behaviour! Also Aunt Petunia - she is on the verge of saying something to Harry, acknowledging his destiny and his task ahead of him. She finally acknowledges the wizarding world with her attempt to say something to him. I think both Dudley and she deserve acknowlegement for this not only in the book but in the film - they were there from the start in both - so they really need to "conclude" them somehow in the film. Apart from that it's obviously a treat to watch Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffith... and the actor who plays Dudley as well... Posted by Siena from Nottingham, UK on July 28, 2009 08:55 AM
I have to agree that the "christmas attack" scene was a bit pointless. And also, am I the only one who thinks that Harry would never ever ever ever EVER just stand there while they ed Dumbledore. I HATED that He wasn't stunned.
And while I'm complaining anyways it seemed very unlikely that he would be reading the daily prophet in a muggle cafe when the movie begins.
... but other than that the movie wasn't too bad Posted by Eva from Danmark on July 29, 2009 01:34 AM
Amazing work, sm. It be nice to see a movie which is closely related with the DH book. I hope they won't cut the Dursleys in DH. They have a major rule in the whole series and it be unwise to leave them when Dudley and Petunia changed their mind about Harry. Posted by Arman from Bangladesh on July 29, 2009 06:39 AM
Eva, I didn't get the impression that Harry just stood there - he had his wand raised and was walking around, watching the proceedings upstairs anxiously. He was at the ready to step in any moment. I just think that the film Harry never expected Snape to do what he did - that's why he obeyed him and kept quiet. The film Harry never learnt about Snape's overhearing of the prophesy - therefore, in the film, the scene actually works quite well. I think up to the last second before Snape cried the curse Harry actually believed that Snape would step in to rescue Dumbledore. Posted by Siena from Nottingham, UK on July 31, 2009 10:42 AM
I agree that he may have believed, that Snape was there to help Dumbledore, but Draco and some of the other eaters were there for a while before, and Harry could have easily attacked Malfoy, while he was talking to Dumbledore. Come to think of it though why didn't Bellatrix and the others arrive at the same time as Draco. He had obviously let them in before he went to the tower, and unlike the book they weren't fighting members of the order. And also, how come Harry didn't attack the eaters when they were dancing around in the great hall, why didn't he catch up with them until they were in the grounds? Went and saw the IMAX 3D version the other day and I have to say it was like watching a different movie. Yes I was still disappointed with certain aspects of the film like I was the 1st time I saw it but in all it was much better on that screen. The 3D is a waste of time it's nothing good and I don't understand the part they chose for the 3D there were obviously better parts they could've done in 3D but the movie itself just seemed different. Everything was closer, bigger and the sound I think made a huge difference. The bangs and different sounds during the battle at the burrow and in the bathroom between Harry and Draco seemed much more intense. I highly recommend seeing it on the IMAX if you can. I really hadnt planned on spending the extra money but I am glad I did. You also see some things in the background on this screen you don't see on the regular or digital screens...such as in the room of requirement all the stuff in there is much more visable! I did see what "sm" says he/she saw in the case it does look like a crown and a pretty big one at that but the bust sculpture is there. It is on the right side of the screen next to Harry after he opens the cabinet and the bird flys out. Its there but is not wearing a wig or the crown so perhaps that is it in the glass case.
Just wanted to give my opinion on the IMAX version. Again, I do recommend seeing it that way it was well worth it just for the differences in picture quality and sound. Posted by melanie from ohio on August 1, 2009 10:45 AM
I also think the Christmas attack scene was pointless. And the scene where Harry and Ginny go into the Room of Requirement was really dumb. I can't believe Dumbledore and Harry just APPARATED out of HOGWARTS! Is it so much harder to film a few minutes of Apparating out of Hogsmeade? Dumbledore would never risk the safety of students for his own convenience. Posted by Ellimac from The Computer under the Stairs on August 4, 2009 10:30 AM
Harry does say you can't Apparate in Hogwarts. Since Dumbledore says "Being me has it's privileges," I think only he, and anyone he takes with side-along Apparation can Apparate or Disapparate within Hogwarts, so he wouldn't be risking his students safety. I agree this idea is too weak for the book, but I think it makes sense in the film since it would be pointless to show Harry and Dumbledore going to Hogsmeade. I have just noticed something else in the HP6 movie (yes I saw it again - actually this was the 4th time had to go to the IMAX) when Harry finally gets the real memory from Slughorn and after he and Dumbeldore see the memory they are discussing the horcruxes and what kind of objects they might be. The first few times I saw this movie I was let down by the fact they gave no clues to what the other horcruxes might be. I think we are obviously supposed to suspect from the movie that Harry is a horcrux. The way he does the little neck movement thing like he did in OOTP and Dumbeldore says dark magic leaves traces is indicating Harry is a horcrux.
Obviously we who have read the book already know this I think its in the movie more for people not reading the books but also for us readers so we aren't saying there's no discovering what the other horcruxes are and I say this because at that moment in the movie when Harry touches the ring and it spins on its own there is a lightning fast flash of voldemort moments and I don't how I missed it all the other times but in that flash there is a snake coiled to spring which then springs as a picture of a young Voldemort in Hogwarts uniform screaming in agony flashes. I believe this to be showing Voldemort in agony as a piece of his soul is ripped out and put into Nagini. Personally I was grateful to have thought I'd gotten thru a HP movie with no snake cuz I hate them but I was wrong. Dont know where my eyes wondered to all the other times but its there and I think its an indication that the snake is a horcrux just like the indication that Harry is a horcrux.
The flashes of pictures during the ring spinning is so fast I'm actually very curious to get the dvd so I can slo-mo it and see if there are any other flashes of other horcruxes at that moment. It seems to be flashes in Harry's mind as the part of him that contains Voldemort soul gets to him again so I'm wondering if thats how they're going to have Harry suddenly realize he knows what the horcruxes are in the DH movie because he actually saw them in his mind during that flash just like in OOTP he suddenly realized where the door he kept seeing was in the ministry of magic cuz he kept seeing it thru voldemort, now he saw horcruxes thru voldemort....
I also noticed a picture of Helga Huffelpuff in the picture collage of Slughorns when Harry first meets him and is looking at the pictures but couldn't get a good enough look at it cuz if went by too quick to see if the cup is in the picture. Just wondering if Harry realize he saw the picture and that figure out that horcrux....any thoughts on this theory? Did anyone else notice this in the movie? Ellimac, I agree - the scene with Harry and Ginny you mentioned was dumb, but I think Bonnie Wright is the one to blame for this. The way she recites her lines made me think of a six year old reading aloud. She just doesn't cut the mustard for me as Ginny at all - she displays nothing of the character's fiery outline depicted in the books. Furthermore they didn't introduce her well in the movie - up to HBP, she was this minor figure who just appeared in scenes alongside others in the background - and all of a sudden, in HBP, she happens to have an effect on Harry totally out of the blue. I don't think Bonnie Wright is terrible, but compared to the others, she isn't as good. I don't mind the idea of the Room of Requirement scene (Ginny taking Harry to hide the book), but I think this could have been used as an opportunity for Ginny to really comfort Harry and for Harry to respond.
I'm glad the flashes of the Horcruxes are included, but they are so quick - I remember being disappointed with this when the clip of this scene was first released. Based on a script leak from a reliable source, an ancient cup and a derelict house were supposed to be shown when Harry touches the ring, though I only saw Voldemort and Nagini. The rest of the script leak is word for word from the movie, but I'm not sure if the parts with the cup and house were even in the test-screening. I don't think the cup is shown, but you're right that it would be nice to watch this in slow motion, sm. I agree that it's likely Harry use the connection he has with Voldemort's mind to find the rest of the Horcruxes in DH.
I missed Hufflepuff's picture in Slughorn's collection. It would be nice if the cup is shown, just as the diadem is (since people did say it looks like the diadem is in the glass case). Posted by Anonymous from Arizona on August 8, 2009 11:53 AM
