Character changes in Goblet of Fire
 by David Haber
In the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie, there is a scene in the Gryffindor common room, where Harry is lamenting that they still don't have dates, the Patil sisters walk by, and in unison they say, "Hi, Harry!" But wait! What is Padma Patil doing in the Gryffindor common room?!

The whole twin thing, was just cleaning up story lines to make is clean and simple.... Posted by Mark Diamond from Ottawa, ON on February 6, 2007 4:01 PM
I agree: i LOVE the thestrals and they BETTER have them in OOTP or the director be recieving some extremely worded mail from me. but this whole "padma in the wrong common room" aggrevates me... changes in the movie always aggrivate me! like the mauraders in PoA movie: they never explained who the mauraders are, which TOTALLY affects the plot line and has got on my nerves since i first saw the movie! Im in complete agrrement. Its completely outrageous and wrong to contradict the book in such a fashion. Oh of course its cute to have the twins say 'Hi Harry' together but can anyone justify making such a huge contradiction on account of some adolecsent ideas of cute? And everyone must agree that its repeatedly pointed out in the series that the Patil sisters are in different houses despite their being identical twins. Which brings me to the second part of my complaint... the girls in the movie are hardly identical. Is it so impossible to find a couple of identical twin gals to do the role? We are avid HP readers and clearly it is unnerving and heartbreaking to see the movie defile facts in such a dismal fashion. The movie does contradict the books sometimes; for example the whole James Potter Seeker/Chaser thing... he book said he was a chaser... guess the movie change?
It's probably going to make it easier for the scene if they cut the whole lavender brown thing, and you can clearly see both twins are in gryfindor when they walk by in their uniforms. Posted by Charlie from Perth, WA on March 1, 2007 12:22 AM
Yes, for THAT movie it makes it easier. but what about farther down the line? are you telling me that Ron isnt going to have a girlfriend in his 6th year? Because ron and hermione werent speaking for a really long time because ron was dating lavender. and i cant call my friend rachel "Lav-Lav" and tease her about "Won-Won" if they dont go out! I love all things Harry Potter, and I am what my friends like to call a "Potterholic"....I notice ALL the mess ups in the plot conversions from book to movie, and what I find MOST disturbing is the eyes. It's always mentioned in the books that Harry has "startling green eyes" but Dan Radcliffe has very BLUE eyes. C'mon people! CONTACTS! I made my brother (who SAYS he likes Harry Potter, but then doesn't know what a Wrackspurt is DUH!) watch CoS with me, and I was pointing out every single mistake that I could see, starting with the eyes. That always makes me really mad, but think about it. If Dan is wearing contacts, he'll go blind, but he also has to wear glasses, so wouldn't they sort of cancel each other out? So it gets on my nerves that HP doesn't have green eyes. and I wanted to see him in bottle-green dress robes. Then he shows up in a suit! What is that?! Monica, you're right. Would it mean that the color of Harry's eyes is not very important, but only the fact he has Lily's eyes. Very good remark. Posted by herve from strasbourg on March 8, 2007 02:20 AM
The movies definitely place Padma in Gryffindor. Promotional pictures of Dumbledore's Army clearly show both Patils in Gryffindor robes. And yes, the contradiction bothers me as well! Posted by A2H from Perth, WA on March 28, 2007 8:38 PM
Ashley,
It is possible to get contact lenses as well as glasses that have no prescription, so there would be no chance of Daniel Radcliffe going blind if he had to wear both for the movies.
But I'm guessing, since he was so young when they started filming the movies, that it might've been considered too dangerous to have him wearing contacts--he could've poked his eyes out putting them in or something.
And since the earlier movies didn't have him with green eyes, it would be kind of stupid to all of a sudden have him wearing green contacts (or rather, yellow, since he already has blue eyes, and yellow and blue make green) in the later movies. First of all let me tell you that my favorite movie is POA, I think it captures the whole mood of the book.
If we want to criticize all the little changes, we can start with Hagrid mistaking Dudley and Harry in the movie, in the book he knows him right away.
Quirrell, he did shake Harrys hand at the Leaky Cauldron in the book, but not in the movie.
There is no scene in the movie for the room in which Hermione deciphers the riddle that lets Harry continue to the room with the Troll (also not in the movie) to get to the Mirror of Erised.
Its been a while since I saw COS.
POA does not mention S.P.E.W. but, to me, it is not important enough, and shortens the movie by a third, Something that nobody has yet mentioned is that Harry receives the Firebolt in the fist third of the book, and has a row with Hermione because she tells McGonagall and the broom is taken from him for most of the book. At the end we learn that it was Sirius who sent it, in the movie you get all of that out, that really doesnt change the main plot, and Harry receives the broom with a feather from Buckbeack, symbolizing that it was Sirius who sent it.
GoF I missed Dobby in several occasions, but what really annoyed me was that in the book Dobby gives the Gilliweed to Harry, in the movie it is Neville. Can anybody picture Neville going into Snapes office and taking the Gilliweed? Neville, whom faced with a Bogart this turns into Snape? How would Neville know that Snape had Gilliweed? Certainly not from the book given to him by Moody/Crouch Jr.!
The book talks about the Patil twins being identical, in the movie they dont even resemble each other, the characters arent even from the same country (or their parents at least), that bothers me, but not really the fact that they are in the common room together, I hadnt noticed until I read it here.
I hope they dont cut either Dobby nor Kreacher from OotP, I have felt throughout the books that the House elf connection be important at the end.
The movie I liked the least was GoF. I hope Cuaron has a chance to direct at least one of the last two movies. Posted by Emilio from Mexico City, Mexico on April 3, 2007 4:16 PM
In the book 6 it was mentioned that the Parvati sisters had to go home. Their parents wouldn't allow them to stay. and nobody even knows wheather Hogwarts be opened in the book 7 or not. So it probably doesn't really matter which houses are they from... but still, there should be more corrections in the film... and I agree with Ashley - where are those green eyes?!
