Character changes in Goblet of Fire
 by David Haber
In the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie, there is a scene in the Gryffindor common room, where Harry is lamenting that they still don't have dates, the Patil sisters walk by, and in unison they say, "Hi, Harry!" But wait! What is Padma Patil doing in the Gryffindor common room?!

After all, moviemakers make a number of like decisions for various reasons and we must allow them a certain degree of artistic licence. However, it is yet another instance of disloyalty to the books, which cumulatively annoy the hell out of me.
For me, the worst book-to-movie interpretation crime (which, interestingly no-one has yet mentioned) is the omission of WINKY from the 4th movie. Barty Crouch Jnr did NOT conjure the dark mark! As previously mentioned, JKR approves the amendments to the movie scripts, so it's not significant to the overall outcome of the series, but it was just wrong.
I'm also already concerned about movie 5. Apparently (as reported on Mugglenet), there is an "action scene" taking place along the Thames in London. Say what!? Posted by Yvette from Sydney, Australia on September 23, 2006 03:30 AM
I also noticed this, but I also realized something else.
I read on another site that Jo said someone may change houses. Since Jo also said Alfonso foreshadowed important information, maybe one point was that both the twins were in the Gryffindor Common Room, and Jo intended to make Padama change to Gryffindor..just a theory:) Posted by Liz from Toronto on September 24, 2006 1:33 PM
Even I've noticed this. I personally don't like the movies as much as the books 'cuz they omit and change most of the parts. Posted by Poojitha from Dubai, U.A.E on September 30, 2006 08:29 AM
When I first saw the movie, I was like come on! What's Padma doing there? Where's Lavendar? How could they do this?! Posted by Victoria from Maryland on October 3, 2006 4:08 PM

A very fine point. While I don't think it would be of much consequence in the seventh book, it still greatly irks me that the movie strays from canon like that...
But it does save time, we can't expect them to include everything within a two and a half hour time frame, if they tried that it would be well into eight or nine hours...
However I don't actually believe that people who were not members of the Gryffindor house would be allowed into the common room. People are bringing up Sirius entering the common room in POA, but, do not forgot that when Sirius attended Hogwarts, he was a Gryffindor.
Harry and Ron entering the Slytherin Common Room is debatable though. For one they were, for all purposes, Slytherins as they entered. Whatever magic most likely wouldn't distinguish between this.
Besides this incident you never actually see anyone who doesn't belong to the house enter the common room. I'm pretty sure Molly Weasley entered in GoF while Harry was showing her around, I think, but she too was Gryffindor at one point.
But now I'm just rambling my own opinions, which is rather silly because I don't care for any of the movies in the slightest, they make the books seem less that they really are.
Anywhoo... that's my input on it all. Posted by Emma from Richmond, Virginia on October 9, 2006 10:35 AM
Well, I agree that they shouldn't have omitted SPEW and Winky and all that stuff... It really added to the story with the Winky hiccupping about Crouch thing. Sorry for the ambiguity, but I think you all know what I mean. Padma being in Gryffindor doesn't really detract from the main idea of the movie, which is the TriWizard Tournament. I admit I was rather annoyed about Fleur... but it would have been hard to get an actress with waistlength white-blonde hair. And since they didn't put the Veela in the movie either, it wasn't really important. Sir Cadogan... I have no comment. He was just a bit demented, in my opinion. I believe that the most interesting "flaw" in a movie, (which also happens to be a flaw in the book) is in GoF. We are told that when Voldemort comes to Harry, he first s James at the door, then comes inside and 's Lily. When Harry and Voldemort's wands link in the graveyard, Voldemort's wand begins to display spells in the reverse order of which they were cast. However, James's ghost comes out of the wand before Lily's. Lily's ghost should be the first to appear, but it is not. I think this is just a mistake on Jo's part, but I am not sure. I KNOW! And i'd just like to say that i hate it when the movie cuts out really exiting parts from the book! even if its not THAT important, i think they should of had the story behind the marauders map. i think the book they cut the most things out of is Prisoner of Azkaban. Another thing that was wrong about the movie was at the end in the graveyard scene. When Voldemort said to Cedric, Wormtail used his own wand. But later on, when people are coming out of Voldemort's wand, Cedric came out too. If he had been ed using his own wand, he wouldn't have come out of Voldemort's. I thought Wormtail has Voldemort's wand at the beginning of that scene... Posted by Dave Haber from Los Angeles, CA on October 24, 2006 2:12 PM
I agree with Margaret. In that scene Wormtail reaches deep inside his cloak for Voldemorts wand, which has a bone on the handle of it. Wormtail s Cedric with his own wand. This is a big plot hole. Did it happen this way in the book? Posted by Josh from Chicago, IL on October 26, 2006 5:22 PM
I didn't even notice that a Ravenclaw was in Gryffindor -- I just saw two sisters obviously hanging out together, possibly there with the specific intention of seeing Harry.
Re James & Lily coming out of Voldemort's wand: The first book edition of GoF was printed incorrectly in the US with James coming out first. When this was pointed out to JK, she corrected it and all later editions/printing of the book have Lily coming out first. (My copy is the corrected version, but the library copy I first read was wrong.) See the Harry Potter Lexicon site for a fuller discussion of this error. Re the movie, I think they both came out almost simultaneously so that it was really difficult to tell who came out first. I have not tried freeze framing -- my DVD players don't do that well -- the scene gets blurred & does me no good when I try. Posted by Beatrice from Abilene, TX on November 4, 2006 9:41 PM
