An Introduction to Arithmancy

by David Haber

Arithmancy is one of Hermione's favorite subjects at Hogwarts, because it is a very precise, measurable and almost scientific method of predicting the future. Arithmancy is a method of divination by numbers first used by the ancient Greeks. Today, Wizards can use arithmancy to help predict trends in the future.

Is it weird that most of the members of my sorority have a character number of 9!

Very fascinating, my name Cornelius Felbinger AND my nickname both get a 5 / 6 / 8 and it perfectly fits...

now i'm trying to get my wife into this!

Some have said that it only works if you use the short version of your name, mine dosen't for some reason but it comes out as 9-9-9 if i use my full name Edward Steven Paul Barlow which describes me perfectly.

"Harry James Potter" and "The Chosen One" have the EXACT same numbers... Creepy!

when I put my name in "Devlin Murray" it comes out as 9-9-9.

i entered my name and had 6,3,3 which is cool... its me... BUT, im gonna be married soon, and my surname be hawkins, which comes up 9,9,9! my marriage completes me. scary!

As Monchi in Tokyo and Dave showed it earlier in this trend, godric rowena salazar helga = 999

Now we know that the ly Hallows probably stand for the founders' relics, it seems to me very meaningful that
Arithmancy leads to the idea of gathering the four founders.

Maybe, what Harry has to do is gather four relics (the four remaining Horcruxes?). Maybe the relics are the objects that the founders used to create Hogwarts and the Sorting Hat's brain. Gathered, they would have a huge magical power.

If you put in Hermione Weasley the Heart Number is 9.

Posted by Maxine V. from Sparks, NV on May 31, 2007 4:29 PM

i'm the same as hermione! 4-4-9.

this is cool, but i'm not sure if jk rowling would put quite that much effort into everybody's names. they all already have significant meanings relating to their character.

This is so awesome! Guess what? Me & my best three friend's numbers are same. Does it mean we are going to be friends forever?

The Kabbala, the ancient Hebrew mystical system, is based on numerology as well. Aleph is 1, Bet is 2, and so on through the Hebrew alphabet. Then words are assigned numeric quantities. This is why, for example, 18 ( and its muultiples) is a lucky number. 18 is made up of ches and yud- chai- which means life in Hebrew.
