An Introduction to Arithmancy

by David Haber

Arithmancy is one of Hermione's favorite subjects at Hogwarts, because it is a very precise, measurable and almost scientific method of predicting the future. Arithmancy is a method of divination by numbers first used by the ancient Greeks. Today, Wizards can use arithmancy to help predict trends in the future.

U dont know from NY: On page 3 of the topic, Dave Haber said the most accurate numbers are based on the name you most commonly used. Example-Voldemort seems to have more accurate numbers than Lord Voldemort.

Character: 5
Yes - drawn to many things at once but commit to none, can be conceited, irresponsible, quick-tempered & impatient.
No - Adventurous, energetic, ing to take risks, enjoys travel and meeting new people but may not stay in one place very long.
Heart: 3
Yes - Sense of humour, unfocused, easy-going & superficial
No - Talent, energy, an artistic nature, social ease, lucky, highly successful & easily offended.
Social: 2
Yes - Imaginative, creative, sweet natured (mostly). Peace, harmony, loyalty, and fairness are characteristic. Can be self-conscious
No - commitment as characteristic. Twos can be withdrawn, moody, and indecisive.

I love how my whole name can be broken down to nine. On an odd note, two original characters of mine named Eden Potter (non-HP) and Rynna Browne are both 532 like my first and last name put together. Cool, huh?

Bill Weasley is 8,2,6 while Fleur Delacour is 6,5,1. Fleur on its own is 8,8,9 and Bill by itself is 8,9,8. And interestingly enough, Phlegm (Fleur's nickname since Order of the Phoenix) comes out as 7,5,2.

This is wierd. I typed in my best buddys name in the calculator (cam blakemore) and these are the results:

Character: 9
Heart: 9
Social: 9

Wierd, eh?

Grindelwald comes out as 1,6,4. I could have sworn it said in one of the books that he was really powerful, yet Voldemort is also said to be the darkest wizard ever. I wonder why Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald, and has this helped influence Voldemort's fear of him?

My full name gives 9 7 2 9+7+2=18 1+8 = 9

My nickname gives 6 3 3 6+3+3=12 1+2 = 3

And if you add my birthday 27+3+1992 = 2022 2+2+2=6
9+3+6=18 1+8 = 9 creepy:P

Okay, I've done my nickname:

Character: 2
Heart: 4
Social: 7

My official name:

Character: 1
Heart: 9
Social: 1

And my full, official name (first, middle, last)

Character: 2
Heart: 6
Social: 5

And all of the descriptions are fairly true! Does this mean I'm schizophrenic?

:-(

Lol it's kinda funny, when I use my first and last name and not my middle it comes up almost exactly like me, but when I use my middle name it isn't like me at all... Probably because I act more like my dad than my mom... I also have the same heart, character, and social as snape... interesting... Here is a debating queston: Do you think your name changes the way you are, or you change the way the name is? I think the name changes you to some extent, because the readings don't change...

What does Y count as? Depending on its use, it can be vowel or consonant. I noticed in the calculator that my name came out differently than my calculations for heart and social because the calculator sees Y as a consonant and, for its use in my name, I counted it as a vowel. Here's my "Y is a vowel" calculations.

Real name, not including middle
Character: 3
Heart: 5
Social: 7
Intersects on these points: Character - completeness, talent, artistic nature, humor, easygoing, unfocused. Heart - personally, I don't think I'm anything like a 5. Social - perceptive, understanding, bright, interested in all things mysterious, originality and imagination are more important than money and material possessions, sarcastic, insecure.

Real Name, including middle
Character: 9
Heart: 1
Social: 8
Intersects on these points: Character - dedicated to service, teacher (not as a career, though), humanitarians, determined, work tirelessly, arrogant and conceited (maybe a bit). Heart - individual, solitary, independent, focused, determined. I'm neither strictly a leader nor follower, though; it depends on the situation. Social - Practical, committed, hard working, jealous, but I'm neither the pinnacle of success or the depths of failure.
All add up to 9 (9+8+1=18; 1+8=9)

Pseudonym "Monkeeshrines"
OK, so I know I made this name up, but I calculated it just for fun.
Character: 2
Heart: 3
Social: 8
Intersects on these points: Character - two-way communication, cooperation, imaginative, creative, sweet natured, peace, commitment, loyalty, withdrawn, moody, self-conscious, indecisive. Heart - completeness, talent, artistic nature, humor, easygoing, unfocused. Social - Hey, look! It's the same as my real full name!

If Y was counted as a consonant, this is how it goes:
Name, no middle - 3,7,5 (Hmmm, Heart and Social are inversed...)
Full Name with Middle - 9,3,6 (Not too much like my other calculation, except that they still add to 9. My complete name is always complete!)
Social 6 Intersects on - friendship, family, loyal, reliable, loving, adapt easily, do well in teaching and the arts, unsuccessful in business, prone to complacency.

I guess the only thing I'm not no matter how you look at me is a 4.

ohhhhhhhhhh
THIS IS SPOOKY!
And possible foretelling,
I found that if you type "albus severus harry" into the calculator you get 9,9,9. the ultimate complete number...
May this be telling us something new or is it just Jo being ingenious again.

JKR impersonater--
I highly doubt that JKR was calculating Dumbledore's, Snape's, and Harry's first names in Arithmancy when she named them.

I did my name and my numbers are:
2,5,6 for without middle and
9,3,6 with middle.
Hey look Monkeeshrines, with the Y as a consenant, we have the same numbers with our middle names! Yippee!

I'm most like a Nine, but kindev a Six. Three does NOT suit me at all.

OOOH check it out: if you calculate
"harry potter tom marvolo riddle"
you get
Character: 9
Heart: 9
Social: 9

And on a personal level I put in what my married name would be should I decide to marry my boyfriend and got 9,9,9!
