An Introduction to Arithmancy
 by David Haber
Arithmancy is one of Hermione's favorite subjects at Hogwarts, because it is a very precise, measurable and almost scientific method of predicting the future. Arithmancy is a method of divination by numbers first used by the ancient Greeks. Today, Wizards can use arithmancy to help predict trends in the future.

Stephanie from Mt. Pleasant-It's interesting to note that Severus Snape's father, Tobias Snape, is also a 4-4-9. The 4 (prone to angry outbursts) sounds like the man in Snape's flash of memory.
However, Eileen Prince is a 7-2-5; when she became Eileen Snape, her numbers went to 6-3-3. I wonder if Tobias Snape was yelling at Eileen Snape for being unfocused and superficial.... Posted by Linda from Fort Wayne, IN on March 8, 2007 1:40 PM
I went through the topic, it's really amazing that Rowena-Helga-Salazar-Godric are 9-9-9 altogether. It's certainly a clue to the fact they have to be gathered, as the sorting hat has stated.
We have to be careful on one thing: last names are often translated in foreign languages. Then, if you compute with the last names (except Potter, Weasley, Dumbledore, Voldemort and a few other), what is true in english might be wrong in german or polish. is it possible to have a 6,6,6 combination. if so that'd be awesome for a character to have. posssibly an evil one hmmm? Posted by mikedagr8 from melbourne, victoria on March 16, 2007 02:33 AM
mikedagr8-- It is possible for them to have the 6,6,6 combo - But I don't nessisarly think that the character would be evil. I dunno. someone type in Lord Voldemort or some variation there of - I want to see what his combo is. Posted by Ashley from Missouri on March 16, 2007 4:14 PM
6-6-6 is not possible. The first figure is always the sum of the two other figures. Then, it has to be 3-6-6, or 6-9-6, never 6-6-6.
Note that Neron was said to be 666, corresponding to "nrwn qsr" in hebraic letters (in hebrew, some letters were given correponding numbers as high as 40 or 200 - the number is the sum of the letters).
Also in Greek, lots of words were supposed to be 666 (T was 300 and S 200).
It's not the same arithmancy. Posted by herve from strasbourg on March 19, 2007 09:16 AM
harry james potter hermione jane granger ronold bilius weasley
when calculated together ALL at the same time come out as
9-9-9
(they all complete each other) how true... very interesting. makes you wonder if JK planned it that way. Posted by aaron from kansas on March 24, 2007 12:52 PM
When I typed in my full name it didn't match me. When I typed in just my first and last name it matched me perfectly...mayebe it has something to do with the fact that I act and look more like my dad than my mom... Posted by U dont know from new york city on March 26, 2007 05:59 AM
Aaron, where did the jane in hermione's name and the bilius in ron's name come from? Shouldn't it be Ron Arthur Weasley?
Mandy, I have the exact same character number as you!
Anyway, Ms. Rowling's name (Joanne Rowling) makes 4,9,4. Her character is predictable, organized and always reliable. If she is predictable, then can we predict what happen in the ly Hallows? It's good she is organized and reliable- I would really hate it if she let some question that popped in our minds as we were reading the first six books unanswered...
Dave, this was a great article. Thanks! Posted by Hannia Zia from Markham, Canada on March 28, 2007 07:57 AM
Hannia Zia, Ron's middle name IS Billius, and Hermione's middle name IS Jane, that has been mentioned many times. Not in the books I believe, but you can go to the HP-lexicon and you'll see. This is my first comment, and I think that this site is brilliant. I was so delighted when I saw this article. I was searching and searching, but this is the best article about arithmancy I have ever seen. Dave thank you for bringing joy in our lives.
