Half-Blood Prince IMAX release pushed back to July 29 [Posted by Dave Haber on Tuesday, 06/09/09 12:41 am] [Comments] [Full Blog] [Tweet This]According to TV Watch Online, IMAX has announced that the IMAX release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be July 29, two weeks after its release in standard theaters. In an un-official statement, IMAX said:
"IMAX and Warner Bros. have announced the opening date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: The IMAX Experience. This film will open in IMAX theaters on Wednesday, July 29, 2009. Only in IMAX theaters will fans be able to experience scenes from the film in spectacular IMAX 3D ... Tickets will go on sales closer to the end of June."
When asked for more details by TV Watch Online, IMAX responded:
"The film will open in 35mm theaters on the 15th; however, it will not open in IMAX theaters until the 29th. Basically what happened is IMAX Corporation signed a contract with Paramount guaranteeing them a 4 week exclusive window if they filmed parts of Transformers 2 with IMAX cameras onto IMAX film (something that is quite a bit more expensive). Unfortunately that was back when Harry Potter was due to open November 2007 and when Warner Bros. pushed back the opening date Paramount was not willing to renegotiate the contract it had signed with IMAX. The delay is certainly disappointing, but I know that seeing this film on an IMAX screen with scenes in IMAX 3D will be worth the wait (or a second viewing)."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, after this announcement was made public, shares of IMAX dropped 4 percent to $7.31 following a Wall Street analyst's claim that the delay "should negatively impact IMAX box office results."
